Hey guys, this computer is pretty old so I bought a PCI to Sata connector to try and backup the data onto a newer SATA HD.
The SATA HD has been completely formatted and I just want to make a backup copy of my old HD.

I bought this adapter at a mom and pop computer store. Unfortunately it didn't come with the installation disk.

I've gone to the manufacturer website to try and download drivers and bios but its just not working for me.
I have a floppy drive, but it doesnt seem to be working.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

Click on the link below to go to the donwnload section of Silicon Image Website

    http://www.siliconimage.com/support/index.aspx

At the bottom of the page it says start here.
Click on the drop down box and select your product. SiI3114

At step to choose driver from the drop down box

and at step 3 choose your OS and click go.

You will be given a list of matching files and you simply download the latest driver listed and save it to your disk.

This will copy the driver files to your disk in a zip folder.

Create a new folder in the Programme Files folder called SiI3114 and extract the contents of the zip archive that you have downloaded into the directory.

You can now delete the download zip file if you like.

If you haven't already done so install the PCI card and boot your PC up. You will then be told that windows has found new hardware and be prompted to install it. There is an option to allow windows to search for the best driver or you can manually tell windows which driver to use.

As you have downloaded the driver you want to tell windows to use the driver info that you saved in the Programme Files/SiI3114 folder and windows should take care of the rest.

If you already have the PCI card installed then open device manager and somewhere there should be an Icon with a yellow and black exclamation mark. click on this and then choose remove this device from the top.

Click on the scan computer for changes button and the above mentioned installer should launch.

Please post back if you any of this does not make sense or you need any further help.

I think this is because the computer is trying to find the file itself and auto-install it. The first screen in the installer should say something like "Can windows connect to live update to search for the driver?" Choose "No not this time"

The next screen will say something about insert the disk that came with the hardware and you have two options; Install automatically and and install from a specific location. Choose "install from a specific location"

You chould get prompted to locate the driver file. You need to find the file that you have downloaded and extracted.

    It should then install.

That's what came up when I tried to do a manual install and find drivers.

I had an extra 3512 and installed that. The drivers installed by using your steps, dont know why it worked for this but not the other. Now I'm not sure how to install the bios.

I noticed that the computer has an IDE-pci adapter on slot 12 and I have the satalink on slot 11.
Whenever I have the sata hd plugged in the computer tries to boot from that, and ends up showing BOOTMGR missing. I'm trying to make the SATA drive a slave to the primary IDE one.
I've messed with the phoenix awardbios but I cant seem to figure it out.

You dont install a BIOS. Im not sure why it is trying to boot from the PCI card as that should not be active until you boot into windows.

It might be worth looking at the boot order in the system BIOS and make sure that your IDE is listed first.

You cant set your SATA as slave to the IDE as they are not on the same "channel".

For a do it yourself project this is horrible!
I tried a whole bunch of flashing and nothing worked.
I took the computer apart to use another floppy disk drive from another computer. While taking the old floppy out I may have loosened the sata cable, I pushed that back in.
Finally after a whole bunch of frustration it just worked.
I don't know what I did. but i'm glad it works.
    Now hopefully it works well.

Thank you so much guys for all your help.
If theres anything else you'd like to know, let me know.
