Just recently my Western Digital MyBook Essentil 2.0 quit running. It would begin to start and then just stop. This leads me to believe it was the enclosure, so (after checking warranty status) I pulled the enclosure apart and removed the HDD.

It is a WD5000AAJS-22YFA0, (like a WD Blue Caviar or something). I put the HD into my case and plugged in the SATA cables, (already have one sata hdd).

    The problem:
My hdd is not showing in Windows Vista 64-bit. Device Manager or anything. I went into BIOs and it is showing.

    Any ideas?

Thats the problem here. It isn't showing up in the Device Manager (as said above). So I have nothing to click on options.

Just to be clear disk management isn't in device manager, there are two windows in disk management the top window shows the active working disks that windows detects and the bottom shows disks windows doesn't understand,if it's not in the top box check the bottom window,it will read disk 0/1 basic/raw ect.

If it isn't there run WD data lifeguard software to see if you can diagnose the drive.

The floppy version is more work but more powerful.

    Alright, now it's getting deep.

So, I downloaded the CD version of WD Diagnostic Tools blah blah, and booted to that. And of course, that drive is not there.

Yet, it is still listed in BIOs.

Well its not the enclosure then, the hard drive is probably cabbaged.

I'd give the floppy version of the WD tools a try, check sata 1+2/3+4 are enabled in bios, try optimised settings and safe settings in bios, try disabling smart also, try a different sata cable and connector.

Strange your out of warranty WD products can be RMA'd up to five years,I RMA'd a raptor I'd had for 5 years and they sent me another, great support.

EDIT you checked the warranty status on the website right?Just type your product code here unless you already have-

Alright, well I think I'm just gonna pull it out and put it in the pile of dead computer hardware. About the floppy version, I haven't had a floppy installed in my computer for years.

And yes, checking the warranty was the first thing I did. I'll keep the HDD around until I upgrade to Windows 7, something a friend suggested might work. Might as well, no reason not to.

Bummer, just make sure your try both product codes, the one from the HD and the one from the enclosure.

    Later:)
