About a year ago I picked up 3 Hitachi 500Gb SATA II drives on a Newegg special. Have used 2 of them in systems and they work fine. Went to use the last one today in a system and it just seems to run slow. Try to install Win 7 and after 40 minutes it's only 60% thru expanding the files. Used gParted on it, redid the partition, started Win7 install, had Win 7 do a full format and it took 2 hours.

Ran Hitachi's drive test boot disk, Parted Magic drive tests, drive passes all tests. No clicking noises, just very slow response. Drive faulty?

In addition to @the mekanic's suggestion, make sure your BIOS is set for AHCI and not IDE mode under the Sata Controller options.

Do you know the full model name of the drives? I'm assuming they're cheap slow drives since you got them in a special deal in which case it could easily take over an hour to do a full format on a 500gb drive.

I concur with Tgell and mekanic suggestions, once you know the exact model number find a review or benchmarks then compare them to your benchmark scores or the manufacturers performance specifications.

I got 3 of the same model on sale last May ( HDS721050CLA362 (0F10381) 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive). 2 work just fine, this last one just takes forever to load anything. Tried it in another system (having 6 in the house does come in handy) and the symptoms follow the drive.

Fortunately it is still under warranty so I got an RMA for it. Just odd as I've never had a drive act like that. Had them crap out but usually with clicking or even beeping (Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid did that last week-DOA out of the box).

Well, run the RMA and let us know in regard to the resolution.
