:) I have 2 SATA 120 Gig Seagate Barracudas. that have been running fine on a AbitN7S2 Guru. I buggered the mobo so have now installed an identical one and have done the usual procedure to set up the Raid/Stripe system. Firstly I went to ''Resolve Conflict'' but it said there was none so booted and no drives were to be seen, went back and deleted and reset up Stripe on 16 bit, updated drivers. On boot I see them there but are not to be seen My Computer just my drive ''C'' They have an OS on there so tried to boot using them but no recognition. Any ideas please ???? and yes they are switched on in Bios

    OS\XP Pro SP1

I forgot to say that although they show on POST screen they are not recognised in boot sequence in BIOS, also I ran ''Everest Home Edition' and they are clearly shown installed correctly. There is an issue of the EIDE HD that I am using now as no matter what jumper setting it only shows as slave in BIOS and that is after a repair and HD (Eide) set to master.I am to try another OS (XP Pro SP1) install on another EIDE HD to see if that resloves the issue.

On further investigation I can now concise problem down, the Raid set up is referenced everywhere but the boot record and is showing in Disk management as ''unallocated'' ??? have been all over the net and cannot find a similar posting,, come on guys help me out with this one as am to face a similar problem when new mrb and Cpu arrives.. :) lol

So all you did was replace the motherboard and you are trying to recognize the disks from the OS or from an install disk? Are you booting into an exisiting OS on the drives?

Have you tried a bootdisk. Do a full format on a floppy (writes boot code) add NTLDR, NTDetect.com and boot.ini from a system with the same service pack level.

Can you get in that way?

Thanks for response but I have over 70 Gig of music on them (SATA) and do not want to lose if at all poss.but its looking kinda of bleak, In the F4 Raid setup there is a facility there that wipes the old Mobo settings then takes a snapshot of new mobo and that should be it, its called ''Resolve Conflicts'' but have tried several times and says there are NO conflicts so assuming what i read in Help I should be able to access as new mobo setings are in place.. When I build the new rig I want to put these 2 Stripe Raid in there, so a dummy run on this identical mobo was to be easy so I thought, so back to the drawing board .. thanks again for response :)

OK I think I understand your configuration. You have an OS on another drive and can boot to it....your SATA drives show up unallocated in disk management.

Your MBR or you Primary boot sector is screwed up(does not have the proper space allocation for the drives).

Download sector inspector and post the results here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2a-a586-4079-9489-c3ea14573fc4&DisplayLang=en

It will install it to C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools > go to a command propmt and run it. Pipe it to a text file and paste the contents here.

Hi the_mc have dl'ed the prog and installed but am a bit out of my depth here .. I installed to the appropriate place,C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools and when I activate the ''dos'' screen flashes for a multi second, do I have to use a dos command from 'command propmt''?? have read all help but not very explanatory on how to initiate.. also what is to ''pipe'' many thanks for your help as have been on this for about 10 days now non stop but have endless patience but patience runs a bit thin when no answers are forthcoming. lol :)

you are right. You need to open a dos prompt then navigate to the folder that sector inspector is at.

    type :secinspect.exe >sectors.txt

This will create a sectors.txt in the same folder. Open it and paste the contents here....I will be able to tell you if the disk will be readable. It will look something lik this:

Hi again the_mc I cant thank you enough for this help I have managed as you can see by results below.. IThe object of this exercise is if I can access the Raid/Stripe I can then copy music over to Eide slave then when new rig is built I can format (raid) and setup stripe again and then copy the 70 Gig of music over.. I lost 80 Gig of the same not 6 months ago and this would be another blow to say the least if all this was lost.. (and whats that they say about backup ?? :) Fingers crossed on the outcome of your reading.. many thanks again.. couldn't paste so have atatched file.

Well I hate to be the one to give you bad news but the MBR is all zeroes as you can see. This means there is no disk signature or partition information. The only other thing you could try is a data recovery tool which parses the MFT to look for files. Check out the link for free utilities.

I have not used one of these free programs but I have used a lisenced data recovery utility with some success before.

u did delete the array in the bios don't you???

when you delete and recreate an array in bios, it deletes the allocation table to create a new one so windows can configure the drive..

i hate to give bad news but.... never ever delete an array when something on it,

maybe some proggy might be able to recover data from the disk....but that disk must somehow be seen by windows....i don't know if he can see them as not allocated, the soft will be able to recover data from

    hope that helps

Hello mc Many thanks for your interest and help... we live and learn so your info i will remember well. I have managed to recover about 13 gig back which is better than a kick up the arse, I used r-studio recovery but trouble with that is it has only found this out of the one folder of 70 Gig. Tried other recovery progs but no good at all.. Incidentally it would be advisable to Format the RAID 2 x 120 gig western digital SATA in new rig when built. Once again many thanks :) and in future I will back up to spare HD.

No problem....glad to help. With the price of DVD's and external HDD dropping these days backups are way easier than good old tape backup days;)

Hi Wizard are you around.. I have just connected to new rig the 2 SATA RAIDs that I had problem with ,, I start with XP install and F6 and load drivers from floppy SATA Driver Disc but com will not recognise any HD's there. I have checked CMOS and both places to turn on are activated so it aint that.. Ummm Do I have to reinstall back in old com and Format the drives from there ??? (which I am about to try) will let you know out come...

Jeeeezz i must be brain dead... of course Old Com not able to recognise SATA HD's so cant Format from there... any ideas are welcome... :)

normally you won't have to reformat "old style"

you first need to create an array in the bios, make sure it is bootable,

then when you start winxp install it should be recognized by windows...else you have a problem with :

    a) the controller

    b) harddisk

    c) both.

    hope that helps

Ok thanks wizard , I have at last managed to format and create Stripe array but when i try to install XP they still are not recognised (HD's) have deleted and setup 3 or 4 times to no avail. When I go to Disk management it is saying the same as problem right at the start of post that Drives are not initialised and cant seem to find out how to achieve that. Mobo hasn't been a help as F4 is not command for raid setup but have now discovered to use Tab key at one stage during boot.. I'm at a loss :-(

Hi again wizard, re your last post with reference to ''controller'' do you mean the 'Silicon Image Sil 3112 SATARaid Controller' ???

Hi again wizard.. am all but there have managed to set up stripe and all is well bar the letter/path allocation. As when I try to install OS it cannot find the HD's, I am led to believe it needs to allocated 'C' so as to recognise. I assumed that when i disconnected Eide 'C' and booted from CD with OS it would automatically asign the letter but not so,, The Stripe array has NO letter assigned as I removed assigned 'E' from info in Com management, So how do i assign 'C' for RAID ??

Sorted, thought i'd let you guys know how it went.. NEVER, NEVER believe what you read in MOBO Manual or what info can be gathered from Mobo site.. I was lead to believe that that the driver I needed to install on F6 was Sil 3112 Sat Raid .. But not so.. I came accross it by chance in the F6 window 'A'' Drive' install , I never knew that the 5 drivers in window on screen could be scrolled and that was where the driver I needed was ''via sata raid XP' driver.. not the one I had read previous... lesson learnt.. ;)
