Satellite M40 laptop upgradeable?

I have a Toshiba Satellite M40 laptop that was a current model when I bought it back in June 2005. It's not powerful enough to play high-res video encoded with h264. Is it feasible to upgrade my laptop? I've already brought it up to 1.5 GB of RAM. I'm wondering if it might be possible to upgrade the CPU or video card.

According to the Toshiba website, it comes with an "Intel® Pentium® M processor 740 (1.73GHz, 533MHz FSB, L1 Cache 32KB/32KB, L2 Cache 2MB)".

The video card is "Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 with 128MB DDR shared video memory".

Is an upgrade possible, and if so, could you please give some idea of what the options are? Thanks so much.

 

Most laptops do not have a video card. They have a video chip on the motherboard which can't be upgraded.

It appears you have an onboard chip, not a video card.

 

With 1.5GB of RAM and 1.7ghz CPU, i cant see a reason why you shouldn't be able to play any video.

You have twice as much RAM as the rig im on now and only 0.1ghz less CPU and i can play anything on this.

You might not be able to do anything else at the same time without affecting the playback, so turn everything else off.

Have a look at your processes [ctrl + Alt + Del] and see what is using what.

You can even disconnect from the net and turn off your AV and firewall.

Thanks for the feedback, plodr and ~Q~. I'll try to see if something is slowing my computer down. When I play hi-res videos encoded with h264, the sound plays okay, but the video slows down to a snail's pace.
