    Title says it all.
    SaveMyDesktop v1.2 doesn't work for me in XP Pro SP2 with all updates.:p
    It hasn't been updated for years.

    Link is (not available on MG)
    http://www.softforall.com/Desktop/IconTools/Save_My_Desktop03040004.htm
    OS: Win95/98/ME/XP (so it says)

    It was great when I used W98SE, :cool: but I can't get it to work in XP despite the fact that it says it does.

    Can anyone suggest an alternative that will save your desktop icons / shortcuts, where you put them, not the way that M$ wants you to save them? Bazza

    PS: Anyone using it in XP Pro SP2. It could be me of course. :D Baz

    You might want to try the "truly" freeware utility called Restore Desktop 2.0 which adds a Windows Context Menu addition, that will (after installation) automatically save and/or restore the icons' positions on the Windows desktop. Restore Desktop restores icons' positions (for instance) like after changing the display resolution. You can save/restore the desktop icons' positions very easily by simply manually "right-clicking" anywhere on the desktop and then choosing "Save Desktop" or "Restore Desktop."

    Restore Desktop 2.0 System Requirements: Any PC compatible computer that has Windows 98/Me/NT 4/2000/XP installed.

    Note: You're actually better off without SaveMyDesktop IMO. I have thoroughly tested both of these two utilities and I believe Restore Desktop 2.0 is far more reliable, works much better is far less 'buggy' and it actually is "free to use." I'm also aware of the somewhat "shady" history behind the SaveMyDesktop utility...

    The developer of SaveMyDesktop v1.2 "Johnny Tucker" at one time; for a very brief period during 2003, distributed this utility (version 1.2) as freeware; but then apparently changed his mind and made it a $5.00 shareware program.

    To this day dozens of freeware-download-link types of websites out there on the web still list this program as "freeware" when the links lead to an installation of a program that is not really FREE. The poor dupes who actually click on many of these links and then download/install the program are surprised when it is entirely de-activated after 20 uses and then demands a registration fee for continued use.

    P.S. If you're "totally addicted" to SaveMyDesktop - the last time I checked - PC World still provided their own download installation link to the free version of SaveMyDesktop v1.2 (which is downloaded from their own servers). However I haven't actually checked that link in quite a while so it may not still be valid.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks, COMPUABLE to the rescue again.:)
    I have downloaded Restore Desktop 2.0 (and only 78kb in size :D ) from their site.
    Will install later :cool: Makes you wonder why M$ didn't include something similar in XP?

    @Halo@ Anything similar in Vista?

    RE Save My Desktop. I had it on my W98SE system for years, with no troubles (free version). :cool:

    Guess I'm lucky it didn't work for me in XP as I now have an alternative to try.
    Now all I have to do when I take photos for my desktop changer is to leave a blank place at the top, or bottom, of my photos so I can see the icons in all my pictures.;)

    You sure get some funny results (hard to read icons) if you don't attempt this. :confused:

    @TimW@.

    I guess I didn't state my query clear enough. I was not after how to create shortcuts on my desktop. I use SlickRun and do away with nearly all my shortcuts, anyhow.
    SlickRun www.bayden.com/dl/sr-upgrade.exe

    I was after how to keep the bl**dy icons from moving around your screen because of various reasons. (those that I have not used SlickRun for, not too many though)

    I'm still amazed how often when your thinking (chewing over) a problem, and the solution suddenly pops up before you.

    COMPUABLE provided the solution to stop icons moving. I installed Restore Desktop and it works perfectly. Last night, in a bit of bedtime reading, I came across the tip, already in XP, to lock your icons.

    Right click on your desktop, anywhere, select "Arrange icons by", and "Lock Web Items" on desktop is there on the menu.

    I've used "Arrange icons by" -----> "Name" selection, thousands of times, but never noticed the Lock option further down the menu. My only excuse is the wording to "Lock Web items" does not leap out at you as "Lock icons and Shortcuts" would have.
