I used this to download a youtube video. I wondering whats the best format to use to burn video to a dvd. I used 3GP because it had mpeg in the title. So I thought I would take the 3GP file and use superdvd creator or convertxtodvd to burn to a dvd.

But I looked up 3GP file and it said the its used to transmit and and video files between cell phones and over the internet., and that its compatiabe with mobile devices. So is this the right format to use?

When you use a program like ConvertXtoDVD, the file, in this instance 3GP, will be converted to the DVD-Video format.

I used superdvd creator and the quality is ok , looks a little grainy. I picked the highest quality 3GP though. If I try Mp4 would it look better?

    Yes.
But, there's more to video than the format. The higher the resolution and bitrate, the higher the quality. And the more bandwith and time it will take to download. Also, downloading a video with a higher resolution than that of your TV is pointless.
