When saving pictures online or copying, pasting from Word, Excel, my machine is all of a sudden saving in this .png file format, instead of .jpg like it used to. How do I eliminate .png from my computer's knowledge?

Please view this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PNG as it explains what the .png file extension is. As for changing the association, just right click on one of the file types that the extension is opening, you should see a menu that includes "open with", and choose the program that you want to open these files. Hope this helps!:)

what I was hoping to be able to do was fix it so files I save are in .jpg, instead of the .png.

don't eliminate the .png...embrace it! .png graphics format is superior to the .jpg. the .jpg has a smaller file size, but not by much.

Are you saying that when you right click a picture and select "Save picture as.." your only option is to save it as a .png?
You should also have the option to "Save as type: .jpg , .bmp and .gif" from the drop down menu...on a web site and in any program you use in the "Save Picture" Window that pops up when you right click the picture and select "Save picture as..."

If you do what I suggested earlier, it should correct your problem. :)

    Comparison with JPEG

JPEG will produce a smaller file than PNG for photographic (and photo-like) images since it uses a lossy encoding method specifically designed for photographic image data. Using PNG instead of a high-quality JPEG for such images would result in a large increase in filesize (often 5-10 times) with negligible gain in quality.
PNG is a better choice than JPEG for storing images that contain text, line art, or other images with sharp transitions that do not transform well into the frequency domain. Where an image contains both sharp transitions and photographic parts a choice must be made between the large but sharp PNG and a small JPEG with artifacts around sharp transitions.
JPEG is a poor choice for storing images that may need to be edited further as it suffers from generation loss issues, whereas PNG is a lossless file format and is therefore better suited to storage and recovery of images that are likely to be further edited.

I right click on an image in a Word document and choose "copy". I then paste this into Microsoft Office Picture manager, and it is a .png. The .png files do not work in my Nero Cover Designer or Design Pro label programs.

Then you can simply right click the picture and select "save picture as.."....save it as a .jpg (I save to my Desktop) and THEN copy and paste it into Microsoft Office Picture Manager to work with Nero Cover Designer and Design Pro label programs.

when I right click on an image in Word, there is not an option to save picture as. Only cut, copy, paste

    Ok..we're getting there!
What graghics viewer do you use? Do you have Irfanview? (Comes highly recommended)
If you copy the pic in Word, then open Irfanview and click Paste...BINGO! There's the pic to be saved in the format of your choosing.
You can also do this in Paint, but you will need to know the size of the pic first.
    Irfanview is much simpler.
If you don't have it and would like to get it (It's FREE) go Here: http://www.irfanview.com/

Thanks. Been using Microsoft Office Picture Manager for everything. Preferred to have one program for everything, but may need to get the one you recommended if unable to accomplish .jpg in MOPM. Thanks again.

I also found if I paste the image from Word into an OE email to myself, I can right click on the image in the email and save as .jpg. A bit laborious when I have several to do, may try your program that you suggested.

To use Paint if you don't want to d/l another program do this:
To find the size of the pic in Word:
Right click it and select "Format picture..."
On the "Size" tab note the size (write it down and make sure to note if it is in pixels or inches)
    Open Paint and click "File">"New"
Then click on "Image">Attributes..."...set the width and height to match your pic and then on the "Edit" tab select "Paste"
Then you can save as .jpg from the drop down menu in "File"> Save as..."
    :)

I haven't had that happen to me so I'm at a loss for a solution.
That's why I use Irfanview as my Graphics Viewer and editor.
It never fails to do what I want it to do, do it easily and do it RIGHT.

Thanks again for all this awesome help, Toni. I now have that program as a back up plan if the emailing pics to self gets old. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Mark
