    Hi
I purchased an alienware area-51 7700 a few weeks ago and I must say I'm very happy with the product. However, my computer randomly freezes and I have to shut it off and turn it back on again in order to do anything. I think part of the problem was the virus scan would start scanning on its schedule so I disabled that, we'll see how that works. However, I tried running Scan Disk (or Check Disk, whatever its called nowadays) and it would freeze on Step 4. I don't know why it would do that. I'll attach a DxDiag file. Thanks!

P.S. Also, what is the best way to keep the computer from randomly freezing? I turned off the scheduled virus scanning which helped a lot. Thanks again!

I went to that link and downloaded the update, but my scan disk still freezes at Step 4, which I think is 'Verifying File Data.' Whatever the title is it is step 4. I had it going over night and when I woke up once it was at 66%. I woke up a few hours later and it was still at 66%. Either it is freezing or going ridiculously slow.

I'm assuming you're talking about chkdsk (Windows XP). chkdsk can take awhile to finish, but usually not as long as overnight. Download and run the diagnostic tool from your hard drive maker and see if there's a problem with the hard drive. Even brand new components can be bad or fail early in their lifetimes.... if it is dying, it should be under warranty and free replacement shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure where to get the diagnostic tool for my hard drive. This is the type of hard drive I have apparently, but couldn't find any diagnostic tool.

Any idea of where to find it? I've searched and can't find anything. I guess I just don't know how to search efficiently. Thanks!
