    Hi,
My computer has decided not to scan disk. I go to where you set it up click both boxes and restart. Instead I get the blue screen where it tells me what type of file system I have and that the computer cannot access volume c..i know how to do it thru the run program but I know that doesn't repair bad sectors..I have also tried the OS disc that didn't work either. Any help would be appreciated! :confused

Ok, I guess I don't have the correct terminology...I have tried both ways, manually and by using the command prompts to check disk and repair. When my computer restarts I get a blue screen that says file type system is NFTS, cannot access direct volume, computer is done checking.

Posting the full and exact error message always helps us to shorten the help process.

From your description I would say that your BIOS has recognised the hard drive but there are corrupt sectors or blocked sectors on it, so you can't scan the drive to restart the operating system.

If it is simply corrupt sectors, and they are not too bad a properly implemented scan will recover the system for you.

Post with details of the system and your OS disk for help here.

If there are malware blocked sectors, such as I have just restored on a Dell laptop the system can only be recovered by what is known as a low level format or reinitialisation of the hard drive and reinstalling the system.

When I go to ERROR CHECK(what they are referring to as a scan check) I get the same message. Cannot open volume for direct access. Run this scan every 2 months, NEVER an issue until today. I have dumped all my temp files, and did a defrag but cannot do this error check. I have wi9ndows XP service pack 3. any ideas...very odd. Is ther an alternative program I can use to do the same thing? thanks:confused
