ScanDisk "Standard" Problem

Running in "Standard" (WinME) causes "checking folders" operation to repeat over and over, never completing. It reports that something may be writing to the hard drive. I have closed all other applications, even Norton AntiVirus, no luck. I can run the "Complete Scan" (which takes hours and shows no errors) and can run Standard Scan with Windows in Safe Mode, which also completes and reports no problems. Still can't get scan to complete in Standard with Win in Normal Mode.
Operation of computer "seems" normal (Dell Dim. 4100). This all started while installing TurboTax 2004, received several error messages causing me to uninstall and reinstall this software. The next boot-up I received the "Inproper Shutdown" message (which was a normal shutdown) and the problem was noticed with ScanDisk. TurboTax seems to have loaded ok. Help!

I seemed to always have this problem until the last time I ran scandisk and defrag when I did so in safe mode. End of problem, so far.

Regarding your Turbotax problem, I encountered trouble when trying to update Turbotax Basic. I finally emailed the company and unbelievably they called me back in less than 5 minutes. Anyway, they couldn't get it to update either so they sent me a free copy of the upgraded Deluxe version. That solved the problem. I have Windows 98.

Following your instructions I deleted "systray" by mistake! I could not reverse this error and windows would not open in the normal mode, "safe" mode only. I tried everything to correct and no luck. System Restore has never worked for me as long as I have used this OS. To correct I reloaded Win ME. Things are back to "as they were", the problem with ScanDisk remains the same.

I'm going to try that other recommendation, running Scandisk and Defrag in the Safe Mode.

I hate Windows ME, it has been full of bugs and crashes all along. I have used XP on another computer and don't find it "user friendly" but what I hear it is more stable than Win ME. Do you have any opinion on XP vs ME?

    Hi

use the task manager to shut down everything except "explorer" and "systray"

    control+alt+delete>highlite task>end task

repeat this on all tasks EXCEPT the two I mentioned, you'll probably have to do this to defrag as well.

when you are done, restart the PC

There is an excellant user forum for dells here

I like XP more than ME... but I like 2000 the most. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for the recommendation, however, this also failed. I'm not having any other problems (that I'm aware of) but ScandDisk finishes only in Safe Mode. With this and all the other past crashes and error issues I'm thinking "new OS". I'll probably settle for XP Home although Profesional looks good (except the price).

Bummer, well at least ya got it done :)

Keep that link to the dell forum, it'll come in handy

I've been running ME for almost 6 months flawlessly, but if I had the money I would move up to XP, but I dont have any disks that came with my PC and doing any upgrading on a dell without them is tricky

    Oh, and shutting down "systray",,,ouch
