I am using Windows XP Service Pack 3 and have an Artec AS6e Scanner that I have been using for years. Here lately the scanner works fine about 25% of the time but the other 75% of the time I get the error message that there is no scanner connected to the computer. The Scanner is connected thru the Parallel port (ECP LPT 1). Artec says the software has to be run using the Compatability Mode for Windows 2000 in order to work with Windows XP. This has been doing great for several years now. The only recent change I have made is that I up-graded my RAM from 512 to 1024. I also had to change my Virtual memory to 4000 minimum and 4050 maximum (after the RAM upgrade). I have tried manually installing the scanner instead of letting Windows do it automatically, but that doesn't work either. I don't understand why it will work sometimes and not all the time. Please, suggestions from anyone. Thanks

I have a USB scanner that works most of the time, but sometimes 'disconnects' or something. I think it may be a problem with the scanner itself. If you have another computer you could try it and see if it works. If not, it is likely the scanner.

Also, sometimes manufacturer's sites have updated software for download, just search for your scanner model. Maybe you can find XP-compatible software to use instead, depending on how old the scanner is.
