not tried that model neg scanner Jim, but have used both the Nikon Coolscan and Minolta Dimage scanners ( mainly becauce they use cold cathode light sources.... they give better results than with other light sources ) but they come with a high price ( average $700 ) but some models have the same scanning resolution that that Smartscan one has @ around 2700dpi which is pretty good for negs and at a sub $200 price NOW thats a bargin :)

all you may need to do is clean the image up a bit using something like Photoshop or Paintshop Pro to remove dust and scratches etc etc

I got the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III, and like it a lot. I have the same situation-- 50 years worth of Dad's slides. I didn't want to spend $700 or $800 and, after some research, settled on this one @ $289.00 You might want to consider getting a light table to sort through them before even previewing them in the scanner-- it gets pretty tedious doing it four at a time. Also some dust removal tools-- at 2820dpi, the tiniest specks look big, and removing them in software after the fact is also tedious. Have to admit, though, it's fun restoring old images-- the results can be pretty amazing, even with limited practice.

Just noticed the model III has been replaced by the model IV, apparently, and at the same price. Now 3200dpi.

    Thanks! I'll look at both.
