    hi everyone,

i've been having some problems with my computer lately, and i want to run a operating system check. i read in some forums that you need a service pack II cd to check a computer with spII, so i ordered one from microsoft.

i got the cd, but i don't know what to do now. it is (what i assume to be) a corruption of explorer.exe, if that helps.

i have my media center installation CD too. i'm not sure how i can do it (i know it's something you enter into the run command prompt).

    could anyone help?

    thanks.

I believe you're referring to 'system file checker'? Open a command prompt and type in 'sfc /scannow'. You will be prompted to insert your WinXP install CD. You can apparently get away with using a 'regular' WinXP CD even if your computer has been updated to SP2, as long as you didn't get rid of the 'service pack files' folder which should be there after you upgraded to SP2. Otherwise, you'd need to use a WinXP CD w/SP2 slipstreamed onto it.

Sometimes a computer will not allow 'scf /scannow' to run, in that case use 'sfc /scanboot' to have it run on a reboot.

okay, i have a folder called "servicepackfiles" in the c/windows directory.

so i guess that's a go-ahead to do the system file checker?

(ps, yes, that is what i was referring to .. just couldn't think of the name)
