Scanning Removable Drive

    Hi,
I am using a Flash stick to store complete disk images for use in case of severe problems. I use the programme Macrium Reflect to put the image onto the stick.
My total system is about 17 GB and Macrium compresses this to about 10 GB which goes onto the stick.
Today after making an image I decided to do a virus check on the image on the stick with Avira Ant Virus which has a facility to check removable drives.
Normally when I run an on demand check of my hard drive with Avira it takes about 50 minutes but it checked the Corsair stick in just over a minute !
To me it just doesn't seem possible that it could check 10 GB of compressed info in that time. Am I missing something here ?
    Any help would be welcome.
I tried the Avira Forum with no joy so I thought I would tap the Major Geeks brains.
I include a log for information.
    Regards Alex

Since your image is compressed, I'm assuming it is archived (zip, rar or something else). Unless you specify what you want scanned in AntiVir, it skips archives by default.
So fire it up again and check scan archived files and it will probably look at everything.

    Hi Plodre,
I have just checked and I had got checked "Scan Archives" , "All Archive Types" and "Smart Extensions". Is this right or should I uncheck one ?
    Regards Alex

Sounds right but I don't use AntiVir. Make sure that those settings are not just for drive C but for your external drive as well. That's the only thing I can think to check.

    Hi Plodr,
As far as I can tell the settings
are universal but it doesn't make a point of saying that. At any rate I have been through every single setting and there is nothing relating to just removable media.
It just doesn't seem credible that a full compressed disk image can be checked in a minute.
    Regards Alex

As your log shows, it only scanned 1 directory and 91 files.
Your backup would contain thousands of files. It is not scanning them. Your guess is as good as mine as to why.
If I were you, I'd head over to the Avira forum and ask exactly what is needed to do to scan a USB stick with 10GBs on it.

I would have said its due to the archive tbh. I would scan the drive originally, and see if anythign shows up there, and maybe chance it and take it for granted that theres nothing on the image of it.....

    Thanks plodre and GroinshOt
I will try the Avira forum again but nobody there came up with anything at all. At least I now know it's not reliable.
I thought perhaps the low file count was because of the way the image is written but obviously not.
    Cheers Alex
