screen going black

Hope you can help me. My daughter has a P4 1.7 with XP. Lately it has been booting up and then the screen goes black when windows finishes loading. It's ok in safe mode. Any ideas????

 

before you look for anything more drastic clean up the hard drive. you can do this from safe mode.

1) Delete all temporary files, internet explorer cache files recycle bin files and any old junk.

2.) run check disk
Open explorer or my computer
right click on the hard drive
choose properties
click on check now.
tick the fix and bad sectors boxes
click start
Windows will probably say it can't do it at the moment but do you want to run chkdsk on next startup.
Choose yes
restart the computer, normally.

If this does not fix the problem we'll look deeper.

If you just leave it for 5-10 min does it go continue loading again? Sometimes mine will go black for a while when loading but it picks up again.

 

Thanks for the help. Ran chkdsk and all was clean. I've decided to do a full format and see what happens. It's only for school work and there's not that much on it. Shouldn't take too long.

RJ, It's fully loaded but just goes black straight away. Strange, it's not all the time.
