Regarding my laptop I believe I'm having issues with my ATI 3100 Graphics card on my toshiba laptop. Windows 7 Ultimate is installed.
Recently my laptop has been acting strange. When i log into windows the screen sometimes flickers and the screen turns black...the laptop is still running but all i see is black so when i restart it, it SOMETIMES does the something depending if I'm lucky or not. When i goto safe mode to uninstall the driver and reinstall it, it works for a good 2 days and the issues arises again...

You might try checking your Event Viewer at or near the time of the 'black screen', see if anything stands out.

Do you have access to a discrete monitor? If so, try connecting it, see if you can duplicate the problem, which should help narrow down whether this is a display issue or a graphics/mobo problem.

after some testing i found that when it was plugged into an external display no problems like this were found...

That would seem to indicate a problem with the laptop display - if you feel comfortable with doing some dismantling, you might try checking any ribbon cable connections, see if anything's loose, dirty, cracked, etc.

What's your Toshiba model #? Might do a search through any associated Toshiba forums, see if this is a common problem. You might also start searching for a replacement display, if the symptoms are leaning towards that.

so it wouldnt be a driver issue? because when im in safe mode, the display is perfectly fine and also when i reinstall the driver it works for a couple of days and then it starts to act up again...it especially has this problem when my laptop shuts down when there is no battery left and when i restart the problem starts to occur

Of course it could be a driver problem, or some other problem, especially with the new "laptop shuts down when there is no battery left" symptom thrown into the mix. It would seem, however, that when you connected a discrete monitor and the issues corrected themselves, then that would lead you away from driver suspicions. Maybe some firmware/software interface degradation between the GPU section and the display?

I'm just grasping at virtual straws. :confused Maybe some of the gurus here will jump onboard.

I'd revisit post 4 and get a good stripdown manual for the laptop, checkout the Tosh forum.

Safe Mode doesn't use 3rd party drivers.

I'm not a guru with this type of problem either ;)
