Son's old Compaq Presario 5000 (Celeron processor) running ME runs fine except that the screen quality looks like it's in Safe Mode, but it's not.
    Any ideas?

well I'm not sure how much you know about me, so I'll start with the stupid stuff, Right click on the desk top, and go to properties, and finally to settings. Look at the resoloution pull down bar, it might be set to something like 16 bit, or 256 color if there is something like 32 bit, or true color set it to that. If it is 16 or 256, and there are no other settings then download the driver from HP/compaq, and reinstall.

Thanks for the tip. Although I didn't have to download a new driver, your advice led me to the solution just the same. Just updated driver from device manager and the screen returned to normal.
