    Hi,
Last couple of days i have noticed a ripple on my screen when using the mouse wheel.
I am running windows xp pro.
    I have a viewsonic va702 screen.
All windows updates are up to date.
Device manager shows no problems for display adapters.
There is no newer update for the graphics card.
I am lost as to what i need to do.

I think i am correct in saying this only happens when using firefox as i have IE8 & chrome and do not notice this behaviour.
    Please advise.

    Thanks

What is the resolution set at, and what hz (50, 60, 75)? Yes it could be graphic device driver that is causing the problem.

Run FF without the addons. (Click help and select Restart with add-ons disabled).
Does the ripple remain or is it gone? If gone, it means one of your addons is creating the problem.

Also, disable Hardware acceleration in both IE & firefox. I found out the hard way, when I still had 7 on my netbook, that it was hardware acceleration that was causing my issues. I still have it unchecked in FF in Ubuntu 12.04 on it.

The setting is under Advanced, General Tab. Uncheck that. For IE, it is in the last tab, just scroll down until you find it. Also, uncheck Cleartype, and turn off Smart dithering for printing while you are at it.

    Hello,
Before i make any changes i have just found this.
    AMD/ATI cards

We require ATI driver version 10.6 or newer (June 2010), see bug 623338.

Notice that 10.6 is the commercial version number. The actual check is performed on the technical version number, and we require it to be at least 8.741.0.0.

We block the OpenGL drivers on ATI cards on Windows, see bug 619773. This does not affect default functionality, as we use ANGLE instead of OpenGL by default for WebGL rendering anyway.

My driver for my Ati card is 8.593.100.0
I would think this is why BUT if so now what ??

IE is fine so no adjustments have been made.
I turned off Hardware accellation but no difference.

    Resolution set at 1280 x 1024
    Colour quality is High (32bit)
    Refresh rate 60Hz
Run with add ons disabled also made no difference.

I assume it is now the firefox blocked issue for my card, but now stumped as to how to fix it ?

What version of FF are you running? 13.0.1 is the latest. I only use Nvidia on my machines, so I would not doubt that you are having problems with a ATI chipset.

    I am also using 13.0.1

You could try doing a driver uninstall of the graphics & monitor drivers, and then reboot and let Windows find the default drivers. Then you can load in the latest from ATI and try again.

How would i do that ?
Would i remove driver in the driver manager section ?

Yes, go to device management and then find the device. Also do a uninstall of anything ATI on the machine. Once you get it booted back up and it loads the default driver, run it for a day or so to see if it does the same behavior.

If it doesn't, we can go one step at a time at that point.

My monitor is Viewsonic not ati,do i still need to uninstall ?

Also ATI related items i see in device manager are,
Display adapters = Ati Radeon x1200 series.
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers = ATO IDE CONTROLLERS.
    System Devices = ATI SMBus.

Do i need to uninstall all the above even monitor ?

Displaly adapter is the only thing you need to do a device driver uninstall.

I have uninstalled the Display adapter & restarted the pc.
Put the screen resolution back to 1280 x 1024 so i dont have 2inch square folders all over the screen.
Before i unsinstalled,i made a note of the current driver details & version etc etc.
I have just checked them and all back to the same as before i uninstalled.

What happens if you connect another monitor to your computer? That is a pretty old monitor, so it is possible that it is going wonky.

This is the only monitor i have.
I have only noticed thos over the last week etc then remembered that Firefox had updated.

If i find out the date firefox was updated can i use system restore to an earlier date to check it out ?

Just Murphy. Only thing you can do is test with another monitor to rule out either the video card or monitor. If you have a neighbor with a compter, see if they will assist you, by lending their monitor to allow you to test the computer.

My first post said that have IE & Chrome where this riplle is not happening.
I use firefox as a rule and the ripple is present.
I then think this would rule out the monitor ?

I wouldn't. Borrow, beg, steal a monitor to rule out your monitor, since it is a very old monitor, and they do go bad. I would put that monitor at around 12 yrs of age, due to the youngest OS it shows supporting in the manual is XP.

Inverter board, power supply going bad are suspects, along with video chips, or cords between monitor & computer, if everything else checks, even if IE does not cause it, but Chrome & FF does, it is how they utilize the GPU for page rendering.

Run the Passmark test http://www.passmark.com/products/monitortest.htm and see if it does the same when the testing runs.

I remembered that a new flat screen that i had bought had a vga plug on the back.
I have now connected this flap screen to the pc and the ripple is still evident.
I have the resolution on this flat screen set to 1600 x 1200 32 bit.
If i look in device manager under display it still shows radeon xt 1200 series.
Does this help you out ?

Then, I would say that it is a issue with your video card, or if you used the same video cord, get a new one through monoprice.

Its not because the video card is faulty is it ?
I mean Firefox does not support the version it is,correct ?

I have just bought a 26" monitor for this pc.
I now need to buy a graphics card.
When i remove the side cover,i assume the graphics card is the item that the monitor cable connects to,is that correct ?
I need to go and buy a graphics card so the ripple is gone when using Firefox, some questions.
Do i need to know anything from the pc before i purchase the card at the shop ?
Is it just a matter of unplug the old card & slot in the new card ?
Is there anything else i need to be doing ?

Here are the items my local suppliers has for sale.
Would you be able to advise what i might consider.
I do not use the pc for games etc but do watch the occaisional tv programme.
Not sure what all the spec is for but i am sure the shop will sell me anything they need to clear out.
My old card etc is Radeon x1200 series
Computer bundle used is ARS690-M1 series.

I would go with the Nvidia card. You can also take it to a local mom & pop computer place, like a Internet Cafe if they have a tech on site, and see what they say about the problem first. It is harder to do this stuff from afar through a bbs, then sitting in front of the machine.

I have purchased a new Nvidia graphics card & installed it no problem.
I have then updated the drivers from the Nvidia site also.
I still have the ripple on the screen :crybaby

    Any advice now please ?

Bad monitor like I stated before, or not a powerful enough power supply in the cpu case. Most likely the inverter is going bad inside it, or bad cord from the video card to the monitor, or you need to upgrade the PSU.

    Hi
I can rule out the monitor asprevious test did not point to it & i have purchased another new monitor anyhow.
Graphics card replaced with new faster, better card.

I will try a lead from the card to the monitor, then take it from there.
