Screen resolution driver issue? my first post

Hello everyone, this is my first post, I'm usually able to mine this excellent site for answers but I'm really struggling with a few issues. Primarily my resolution is messed up, I did a clean install of windows xp everything seemed fine but after I updated to sp2 it kind of went to hell, and I did just update to sp3.
The current screen resolution settings are at 640 X 480 pixels and can't be adjusted, the color quality is set at lowest (4 bit) that's the only option. At first I thought this thing was booting in safe mode, that's what the appearance reminds me of.
I'm thinking it might be a driver issue, I downloaded Drivermax and it didn't help or I don't know how to properly use it, The device manager shows 4 yellow question marks under other devices and are Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, USB Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible).
I downloaded Everest and generated a report, I'll attemt to attach it.

First just let me say thanks I really appreciate your help.

I downloaded the chipset utility and the usb 2.0 driver but when I try to do the Ethernet driver I get a download error. It reads: This software is only for installation on the OSs listed in the title. Please download the applicable webpack for the OS running on this system to use the Install Now option.

I didn't want to poke around myself and possibly mess up the sequence you've outlined.

That's fine, I'm assuming that was the ethernet driver, correct? Anyway I downloaded it and went on to the audio driver. While downloading the audio driver AVG detected a Trojan/Backdoor threat named PWS-SpyEye!env.a. Should I move it to the vault or allow it?

That driver came directly from intel so I would assume it was a false postive. You can upload it to Virustotal.com to make sure.

Edit: Yes that was the Ethernet driver.

Okay I think I'm working my way though this, the link to the audio driver was for windows NT 4.0.

The link in my first post for the Ethernet driver was for Windows NT. But the link for the audio driver is for XP and other OS's.

Your right I hit it again by mistake. Anyway I went on and downloaded the audio and graphics drivers but my display shows no change. I must have messed something up. I check the device manager and the yellow question marks for Ethernet and USB Controller are gone.

Did you reboot after installing the graphics drivers and is there a yellow exclamation mark next to your video device. You may have to manually set the resolution of the screen.

    Edit: Do you have sound?

I did reboot and rigged up some speakers, can't tell if I have sound yet. I do have a yellow question mark next to Multimedia Audio Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). I tried to manually set resolution but it still gives me no options.

Strange but I just get a blank Page about:blank, Forgive me but I don't get it. I'm still checking on it, maybe it's a security setting?

tgell thanks for your help so far.
I was able to modify my internet settings and download the items from your post #14 but no change. I rebooted and tried to adjust settings, got nothing, tried to adjust in safe mode, nothing again. Anyway thanks again I'll look forward to talking with you again.

    Okay,
I stripped out the inf driver from the intel sound package and attached it as a zip file. Unzip to a folder on the desktop of an admin account. Then in Device Manager, update the driver manually and point it to the inf file in the folder. I do not know if you have done it before so I have included the steps.
Edit: We will tackle the graphics driver last

Well I'm kind of lost, I unzipped the folder and placed it on my desktop. The name of the folder is wdm, is that correct?
Then I go to Start, control panel, system, click hardware, click device manager, right click multimedia audio controller (with the yellow ?), update driver, the hardware update wizard opens, click install from a list (advanced), click next.
Now I'm at the Please choose your search and installation options, click don't search, click next.
This brings me to Hardware Type, I was expecting, Click the Have Disk... button. What did I do wrong? I don't want to guess on anything. I really appreciate the spoon feeding, I'm kind of lost with this.

    Thanks

On hardware type, can you scroll to the bottom and select add new hardware device? If so do that.

    Jayboe Private E-2

What I have is a box labled Common hardware types: at the top of the list is, Show All Devices, at the bottom it shows Windows CE USB Devices, and there's all kinds of stuff in between.

Oh and I'm on the owner account, does that allow the same privileges as an administrator account?

I am not sure what is going on. Can you provide a screenshot of the last window where you expected to see have disk? Click the active window and then Press Alt+Prtscrn. Then paste into Paint. Save as a jpg and attach to your post.

Select Sound Video and Game Controllers and press Next.

Note: If you can I would edit out your email on that image or delete the attachment.

Yes, try that and see if you get a "Have Disk" in the next window?

    Yes I do, click it?

    edit

The one box has CH Products Game Ports highlighted. It also lists ESS Tech, inc., Intel and ThrustMaster.

    edit again

I'm wondering if I should highlight Intel?

Yes and then browse to the inf file in that folder.

Hey tgell, I edited post 26 with other ?s and I'm not able to edit my attachment post. Maybe you or an admin could do it for me?

I will send a PM to the moderator. How did the sound driver go?

Before I press Have Disk should I highlight the manufacturer Intel? That's what I'm thinking I should do and if so what model should I select (it lists several)?

    tgell Major Geek Extraordinaire

I would just press Have Disk for now. Then browse to that INF file and select it. It should then list the sound card shown by the inf.

    Jayboe Private E-2

Wow! I've got sound. How the hell did you do that? Probably not that easy with me on this end. :)

    Great, now for the video.

On the second link I gave, it is a zip file. Do not click on the setup file. Unzip to a folder like the sound card. There should be a Win2000 folder that has an inf file. Put that Win2000 folder on the desktop. Do the same thing for the graphics card as you did for the sound card.

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...rsion=Windows XP Home Edition*&DownloadType=

There is actually a readme file in the zip file that explains how to update via the Device Manager for XP.

Bingo!!! My God, if it weren't for the tears of joy, this screen would be perfect.

Thanks tgell, thank you very much.

No way I could have did this myself. I probably spent a week on this issue, driver problems are just too unique.

    Greetings, Jayboe...

Have you reinstalled the driver listed in post #4 of this thread? Looks as if the software may have become corrupted again.

    Hello Caliban

Thanks for your reply. Here’s what I did, I rebooted and chose last known configuration that worked, that got my internet connection back. Next I went to the download center you pointed me toward from post #4 and downloaded the Intel driver, everything seemed to be working fine. This morning I logged on and everything was good, windows prompted my to load two updates which I did, it required a restart so I restarted, once I was back up my internet connection was gone again so a I chose a restore point from two days ago, now I back on. I’ve been having this intermittent problem for quite some time now but it seems to be getting worse. Any suggestions? I guess I’m really not sure if I installed the driver correctly.

    Thanks again for your help

    Jay

    Good morning...

Unfortunately, intermittent problems such as yours can be amongst the hardest to troubleshoot.

Drivers are usually all-or-nothing types of software packages - either the software works immediately or not at all. Very rarely will a driver just quit - some outside force, however, may be causing driver corruption, or some hardware fault may have the appearance of being temporarily resolved by a driver package re-installation.

One thing you might try is to uninstall anything related to the SupraMAX 56i modem indicated by your report (assuming, of course, that you're not using a dial-up connection). After any software removal, then physically remove the PCI modem - if you don't feel comfortable with hardware removal, we can walk you through the procedure.

Also, you might consider booting into Safe Mode w/Networking for an extended amount of time, see if you can duplicate your symptoms - this could tell us if you have a Windows problem or if some 3rd-party software is causing the issues.

Yeah I'll need to be spoon-fed. I found SupraMAX, but not sure how to remove it. I have cable internet now. Currently I've tried every restore point and I get nothing.

  41. Jayboe

    Jayboe Private E-2

Okay here’s what I did, I removed everything related to SupraMAX and physically removed the modem. While I was restarting I noticed my clock/date was off it was set to the year 2002, this typically affects my connection. I’m not sure why this happens, I recently changed the battery on the mother board. Anyway I'm back on again.

You might consider replacing the battery once again, just to make sure - try going to a different retailer to get the new battery. Also, while you're replacing the battery, perform a visual inspection around the battery area - look for any obvious burn tracks or discolorations, bulging or leaking capacitors, etc.
