The resolution will not change from 640x480. The bar will not slide to the high position, it stays on the low. I tried holding down left click and dragging it, but nothing, same with the right click. I know I'm just overlooking something real simple. I just installed Vista Home Basic from Xp sp1. It has been taking updates for the last two days, so far 120. Is it possible I don't have the update yet, to operate the screen resolution?

    Dell Dimension 2400
    CPU Intel 2.4 GHz
    Ram 1 GB (2x512)
    Service tag: 4xs2831

P.S Is it possible to put Win 7 on with only 1GB of ram?

I did a scan from Crucial.com, it said 2 GB max. I put the 2 GB in and within ten seconds blue screen, it said Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error} the initial session processor or system process terminated unexpectedly, with the status of 0x00000000 (0x0000221 0x0010037c). So I tried 1.5 GB same message. So I put the 2x512 back.

I figured out the screen resolution problem. I changed it in the advanced graphics setting.
Thanks for the insight on Crucial.com nice little tool.

The two 1 GB ram sticks are old, I'll pick up some new ones and get back to you. I'll make sure there the proper specs.

I tried 1 stick at a time in both DIMM slots, one stick was no good. I'll grab a new one today, and my problem is solved.

There is no video card, just the motherboard.

    Hi

Once you have the RAM sorted then for screen resolution you may need to install the Chipset drivers as they will cover the graphics also, BUT sadly looks as if the chipset in your pc does not natively have a Vista driver, it has surprisingly a Win7 one, which is likely why you are running in a VGA resolution of 640x480

If you get Win7 on it then you "may" be in luck as the chipset is graphics driver is HERE and if you dont get a good resolution with them, post back and I have a registry hack that may work to get you a better resolution.

I have Win 7 home premium on it now with 2 GB of ram.
I checked out the Intel site you posted and it goes back to the Intel 954G graphics chip
but, I have the 845G/845GL/845GE/845GU graphics chip which is not listed in that post, so where going to have to try the registry hack. (unless I missed it in the post)

Now I have no sound. I right clicked on the speaker icon no device install. Can you give me a list? I'll work on that after the graphics are fixed.

You need to download drivers for your onboard graphics card and you should beable to change the resolution on your screen if not grab yourself a pci or pci-e graphics card they are quite cheap now.

Thanks anyways plodr, but that is the same driver that is on the motherboard now.
I'll try out David GP registry hack when he posts it, but it looks like I have to buy a video card.

Go figure, I have two PCI-E video cards, but the motherboard only has PCI slots. Just my luck.

    Hi

The Intel link lists the different chipset as the original link on Intel I clicked listed the 845chipset, while it states the 9xx series Intel chipsets cover a vast array of chipsets and this one should also covers yours and its IntelĀ® 82845G Graphics Controller

This "may" work for you as it has for me, but may not work for everyone.

    • Run regedit
    • Search and modify all values named Display1_DownScalingSupported from 0 to 1 (basically once regedit is open make sure you click computer at the top left column then Edit > Find or CTRL+F and past in the fist bold bit and once you have found and changed one registry key hit F3 to search for anymore, likely only one reference but worth checking)
    • Restart the system
    • Check the graphics properties for new resolutions

"Success" Didn't find Display1_... but under HKEY_CURRENT CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Video. There was four long numbers which had the screen resolution.
Two were for the 640 and two for 480, change them to 1024 and 768. When I restarted my computer, my desktop reminds me of Windows 98. I'll stick with that at lease I can see the display properly.

    Just a thought...

Clicking on the link DavidGP posted, on the right you'll see Intel Driver Update Utility. Click it, and then download and run the utility. It will allow you to download the latest graphics driver based on the OS and MB. It will also allow you to download any newer driver for all the onboard Intel devices.

I have it installed on my PC, and used it to download the latest graphics driver.

    Just a thought...

I tried that and no drivers available for that OS and MB. The best one is already installed.
    Thanks anyways Eldon.
