I am experiencing a problem at the present on my other computer
Windows 7 Home Premium on HP Pavilion dm4-1164tx (core i5 450M IIRC) upgraded to 8GB RAM

I was (am) running a lot of tabs in IE11, Opera and Firefox, and notepad and simple Excel spreadsheets
At the time I was using IE11, and I found it seemed to have frozen. None of the controls mouse operated or k/b operated seemed to have any response. I concluded that it was a screen problem rather that a program issue, because on trying to select other IE11 tabs or Firefox or File Explorer when the mouse hovered over the selected item it displayed on the screen, even newly opened ones, but selecting it did nothing, and moving the mouse pointer away from the drop down menu just left me with same greyed out screen. The system task panel which I opened to try to reset integrated graphics, won't close (no HD graphic icon present !)
Trying to open control panel seems to work - it appears on the task bar, but I can't see it because the working area of the screen remains stuck, showing a particular IE tab
The Task Manager seems to work properly, but sows nothing extraordinary
I'd like to change ND REVERT THE SCREEN RES. BUT THE WORKING AREA of the screen in totally occupied.
I'd not to have to reset anything, like shut IE11 or reset PC because I'll lose things (it wouldn't be an absolute disaster though)
    Quick, easy solution anyone ?

a better way to have to have to have put it is 'how to stop this window [any tab in this window] being always on top ?

This problem suddenly started happening yesterday and manifested itself in manner described above, except I didn't realise that with a tab being always on top I couldn't see the file-select window to select the file on which the tab was to perform an operation. I realized this some time later by right-clicking on the empty taskbar area and choosing cascade windows. This allowed me to see other open windows and work with them. On choosing the file for which the tab was waiting I could operate all the controls, but with the window set to maximum - I like to work like that - that window - an IE11 window - is persistently on top. How can I revert it back so that the selected window is the one on top ?

Is there a possibility you could show us....

Like make a video of what it's really doing. Then post it on youtube and then link it here.

I have never heard of IE11 doing this. But maybe i am wrong.

So what i can gather is...

The window or IE is all ways on top like this below. And it's blocking the desktop???

There should be a options to turn off all ways on top option on IE11 let me look.

I am not seeing any settings in IE11 that would allow this ordeal to happen.

Try going into safe mode and see if this happens.

If not then i would bet a virus or malware would be causing some thing like this.

I decided the quickest way to progress was to close all the tabs in that window, close that window, and open another fresh window running IE11. I did not like doing this because I have to re-log in to a number of sites and I lose any current history I might have wanted to keep (I was in private mode); I copied the addresses of the tabs I had to close (well, most of them).

As I tried to explain, my computer seemed to be jammed on this particular tab because it was waiting for input from me - waiting to select a file to process) and the window showing the file selection was hidden by the always on top window in this case, it was a tab.
I only realised this by R-clicking on an empty space on the task bar and selecting another method of display - cascade for example. I could see the window I was supposed to select the file from then, and I was able to select a file and that unlocked the tab and enabled me to work with that window, and by minimizing it, to select and see all other windows normally.
By opening a maximised tab from that window again, that window was again always on top, although I could select all tabs and they all worked normally again.
But I needed to switch between other windows so I could not work with this fault which is why I closed that window.
I reckon that that some software in IE11 or Windows had become corrupted - maybe as little as one bit - a flag.

I apologized to have wasted anyone's time over a simple fault, it seemed serious when I first reported it as only task manager seemed to work, and looked was going to lose a bit of data (a mere annoyance I admit)

My computer (HP Pavilion dm4 1164tx 8GB RAM Windows 7) seems back to its rather sluggish self now, however, I think because I have many windows and tabs open

    Hmm sluggish self...

When was the last time you did any kinda maintenance on the laptop.

I would first run the command prompt or CMD.Then i would run chkdsk /f option to see if there are any errors on the hard drive.

Second i would run are malware system to clean out any infections present.

Post on the main malware forum the logs.

Let us know if this helps any.

    I've let anti-malware slip a bit
I run an AV program in the background, I'm not sure which since I changes to this computer (HP Pavilion dm4-1164tx), it's whatever is the Windows 7 default on this machine, but haven't scanned for a while, I use MSERT, AVG free, and sometimes malwarebytes (free)
    scanners (full).

In fact I may not be running an active anti-malware program, AVG is in passive mode, as I know, but Windows Defender is also not running; is there another Windows one that could be running, and how do I find out ? I had believed AVG was in passive mode because of conflict with another that was running. In fact AVG pane tells me that there another AV program running, but I don't know what it is

Presumably to go through MG's anti malware routine, I will need to take to take every application down which I don't want to do yet. But your advice has been noted and I thank you for it, Wile e coyote.
