A friend of mine has a really cool screensaver on his PC. He downloaded it as freeware from somewhere (he can't remember where) and I really want it. In the Display Properties, all it lists is "Custom Screensaver" in the Screensaver section. How can we track down what the actual filename is for this screensaver? I know WinXP uses the .scr extension for screensavers, but how can we find out which .scr file has been designated to be run after X minutes of inactivity?
    Thanks.

Just do a search for *.scr and manully look for it. Shouldn't be too hard to find, there shouldn't be but like 10 by default I think.

FYI: The default location for screensavers in WinXP is %systemroot%\system32\ , it may or may not be in here, depends on where he installed it to.

:-o I found it. Thanks for the advice bjg. Sometimes the obviously simple soultions fly right past me. :foolish
I copied the file to my USB thumb drive and I'm using it now. It's pretty freakin' cool. It's a screensaver where you're underwater looking up at night, and there's like a bright spotlight shining straight down in to the water. Pretty cool.

But now for another screen saver question... how do I add it to the list of available screen savers on my PC? If I copy it the system32 folder, will the Screensaver tab in Display Properties automatically pick it up as an available screen saver and list it in the box with 3D Text, Flying Objects, Windows XP, and the other built-in screen savers?
    Thanks.

Yes, just move or copy the .scr file into %systemroot%\system32\ directory and it should pick it up and show in Display Properties.

You know what :cry this awesome screen saver was apparently hooked in with MyWeb, the evil adware. The .scr file on its own, on a clean PC, does absolutely NOTHING!!!! :crybaby :banghead :boxing :guns :cry

Oh well.... I should have known.... thanks for the help anyway. I'm sure the knowledge will come in useful someday ;)

If I download anything from a server I don't trust, I always scan it with at least one program.

Individual files like this, use your antivirus or Jotti's scan to be sure it's not packed with a surprise.;)

The .scr file itself is OK, it's clean. It's just useless without all the MyWeb crap. My friend had the awesome screensaver going, and I personally thought he was a bit more savvy then he apparently is. I figured he'd know better than to install a screensaver with MyWeb attached to it. I didn't know he had MyWeb when he emailed the screensaver to me at work (I didn't have my thumb drive when I was at his house looking at the screensaver a couple of days ago). I went to run it on my PC and it did nothing, so I thought for a second "where do many free screensavers come from?" and I answered myself "from MyWeb, of course!". So I emailed my friend, and asked him if he had MyWeb. He said "MyWho?". So, I said, run SUPERantispyware. He did, and it hit on over 800 MyWeb files, which were removed, which also killed the screensaver. :(
