Scrolling is swimming instead of smooth

    HI,

Im new to the forum and have a question.:wave

I have a windowsxp computer which i got upgraded, upgraded the ram from 512mb to 1gb...and also updated the graphics card. the computer just would not work after this, so i decided to take out the extra ram and it seemed to work fine. however, after sitting in my lounge for two or three months i decided to restore it all to factory settings to give to a friend. it all works fine, but only thing is when its scrolling it kind of gives a swimming effect...it makes you feel dizzy! as opposed to the smooth scrolling. any ideas on how to fix this???? is it because i updated the graphics card? would this have come back off after i restored it all?? sorry for sounding so dumb, but its just one little thing that is rather annoying! thanks for any advice....;)

when you restored pc to original it doesnt have the driver to the new card . you will need to dl the drivers for your video card and install them :)

You may need to first uninstall whatever default graphics drivers you're using currently before attempting to install the correct ones for your card. But before you try that....

Go to the Start Button, select Settings/Control Panel/System and click on the Hardware tab at the top. Then click on the "Device Manager" button. Look near the top of the hardware device list you should see now for "Display Adapters." Do you see any yellow or red question marks or exclamation marks showing in the Display Adapter entry? What if you click on the plus (+) sign in front of the Display Adapter entry to show your specific brand and model of graphics card ("display adapter" means graphics/video card)? See any yellow or red exclamation marks or question marks there?

If not, your graphics card may already have the proper drivers installed for it. It depends exactly what you did to "restore it all to factory settings" and and on what you mean by "updated the graphics card". How exactly did you do that restore? Did you use a restore disk (or set of restore disks) that came with computer or run the restore from a special partition on the hard drive? And when you updated your graphics card....did you actually replace it with a newer card or do you mean you downloaded and installed new drivers for the graphics card?

I'm not sure what you mean by a "swimming effect." Can you give a more detailed specific description of what you mean? And does this happen when scrolling in a browser window or My Computer window? In some other sort of display or menu? Do you mean when you scroll it jumps too many lines at a time?

If so, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Mouse and start your mouse software and look for the scroll setting. Make sure it's set to 3 lines and not six. You might also go to Settings/Control Panel/System and click on the "Advanced Tab". Then click on the "Settings" button under "Performance." Check the box for "Smooth-scroll list boxes" so that it reads "On". You can also adjust a number of other options here that affect how fonts and Windows and other tools look and operate. If you have a lower end system turning on too many of these features may make your system lag or appear jerky ("swimming"?). Turning them off should make your system seem more responsive but may not look as pleasing to the eye. Clicking on "Adjust for Best Appearance" turns a number of features on all at once and "Adjust for Best Performance" turns a bunch of them off. I guess the "Let Windows Choose..." button causes the OS to look at some of your key hardware specs (processor speed and memory and speed and amount of RAM on your graphics card maybe) and then make a guess at which features your system can comfortably support and turns those on.

Please give us some more info about exactly what you did to restore this computer to factory settings and to upgrade the graphics card.

Hi, thank you for your reply....

yes, i restored it with the discs...it took the computer back to where it would be if i had just bought it so to speak. does that make any sense?

before i restored it.....i got the graphics card upgraded, i can't quite give you all the details as such at the moment, but will do later (its a friend thats got the computer and cant get the information for a couple of weeks).......i just know i upgraded the graphics to a much better one....i have the disc.....it was pcworld that upgraded it for me and gave me the disc to go with it? hope this makes sense ok. radeon 128 ????

regarding the "swimming" effect......its kind of as if it takes ages for the last line to catch up with one another and it keeps going....as if all the lines run into one another and they just keep "rolling"?????

i will print out and try what you have suggested and when i can get together with the computer i will defo try the things you have said....i will post and let you know.....
    does this help any??

also, when the computer started up after i restored it....it was looking for a video adaptor...could this be the problem?:confused:confused

It sounds like when you ran the restore disks that procedure probably installed the drivers for your original graphics card. At that point you needed to uninstall those old drivers and then install the drivers from the disk that came with the newer Radeon graphics card you bought.

At this point it's still worth a try but you may need some special "driver cleanup" software (there's free stuff here at majorgeeks for that) to get everything back to square one so you can start from scratch.

If you have the manual/instructions that came with the new graphics card, read them over to find out how the manufacturer suggests you should install the drivers for it.

Likely it will say you should 1) Uninstall the drivers for the old graphics card by going to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and looking through the list until you find the old graphics software. (You'll need to know the name of the company who made the old graphics card or look for something clearly identified as graphics adapter driver, graphics card driver, or video card driver or similar words.) Click on it and select "Remove" and click any further confirmations requested to remove that old graphics driver.

Then 2) reboot the computer and when you get to the desktop and the "Found New Hardware" wizard starts up just cancel it/close it down. Then insert the CD that came with your new graphics card and select "Install drivers" (or something similar with words to that effect). Then reboot when instructed and that should do it.

In addition though, it could be there's some screwy setting in your mouse software that's causing this scrolling problem. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Mouse and check all the settings in your mouse software to make sure there's not something there that will correct your scrolling problem.

In any case, I think you should be sure to remove your old graphics drivers and install the new/correct ones.

Good luck and let us know, once you're able to work on the old computer, if you've had any luck fixing it.
