Up to recently I could scroll up and down a web page using the right hand side of my touchpad.
All I had to do was place the cursor at the right hand side of the web page.
    That has now stopped working.
I believe that it is Synaptics SP/2.
Also, tray icon is no longer showing for touchpad.

Since you didn't mention a brand and exact model for the laptop, I can't point you to the driver page for your device.

Looks like you have lost your driver. This can happen if Windows tries to update it or another program steps on the driver.
Try using Device Manager and rolling back the driver or installing a new driver from your manufacturer's website.

    Sorry.
The brand name is Medion, a German brand sold through Aldi stores Model MD 96290.
I note in Device Settings that everything is greyed out.
I wanted to click the radio button for Animated Tray Icon In Taskbar.
Could the device be switched off?
    Thanks.

    Thank you.
That is the version that is currently installed (Feb 2007).
Just wondering if it will make any difference?

It seems the driver has become corrupted. It's a small download and if it doesn't fix the problem, then it's hardware-related. :cry

Normally at night I put the machine into Hibernate but last night I shut down completely to see if it would make any difference when opening today, and as a last resort before downloading a new version of touchpad.
Delighted to report that everything came back to normal on opening up this morning.
Sincere thanks to Eldon, plodr, and DOA for all their help.
Hopefully this post will be of some help to someone travelling the same road in the future, as it seems to be a fairly frequent problem.
    Thanks again.

    Great! :wine
Shutting down the PC (or removing the CMOS battery) can and do mysteriously fix proplems.
