This is a 2TB USB 3.0 external drive. Here is a link to the support page:

I purchased this drive recently. The instructional material that came with the drive doesn't address this.
I would like to know what the deal is with the software that comes with it. I am not clear on the purpose of it (name of software and/or its purpose).

Here are the main files that are on there:
    SerialNumber.xml
    Start_Here_Mac.app (folder)
    Start_Here_Win.exe
    a couple of icons files

In all honesty. You don't really need the software it's a plug and play device.I have a western digital my passport and it only needs a USB to connect. The software does not do much.

I agree with @wile e coyote. Bundled stuff is not necessary for functionality. FWIW I think Start_Here_xxx.xxx usually downloads drivers for older OS, SerialNumber.xml is a file containing drive information, and the icon files are probably used by explorer to display in 'My Computer, This PC'.

You can delete them and it won't cause an issue. If you're worried back them up somewhere and forget about them.
