40C is definitely an OK temp for a video card... if it's an ATI card, try running this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATI_Tray_Tools_d4569.html and turn on & configure the Hardware Monitoring Graph to log the temps. If it's not an ATI, I'm sure that some poking around will reveal a similar tool for the card you're using. As for the memory test, try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Video_Card_Stability_Test_d5404.html It works with all cards. It's a bit basic, but I've used it in the past to find faulty cards. Just let it run for awhile with the ATI hardware monitoring program running. You can also try something that really pushes and maxes out the video card, like 3D Mark 2001 (link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/3Dmark_d99.html) and see if things get whacky after running it 5 or 6 times in a row.... good luck!!!

You could always pop in a different video card (if you have one) to see what happens. Running a diagnostic on the system RAM might not be a bad idea either..... I like this one: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_Memory_Diagnostic_d3955.html

Judging from the pics above, I'd say the card is probably failing. It seems that it's fairly new (going by the model number) and should be under warranty for a free replacement thru MSI. If the problem has always been there from day one, it may be a compatibilty issue with the MB; check your MB maker's web site for a possible BIOS update to correct the problem. Try using a different monitor and see what happens. And, like I said above, try another video card, any video card will work: an old PCI card if you don't have an AGP slot is fine; or another PCIX card if you can borrow one from a friend or something; maybe buy a cheap used one for diagnostic purposes. You should be able to pick up a used low end ATI (like a X300) for under $40 or $50. You'd also have a card to use if you do need to return the 7800 under warranty, and you'd have no down time whilst MSI processes your return..... maybe the MSI forums/FAQ's/tech support pages can be of more help. www.msicomputer.com .... good luck!
