Hi I have two computers that run off of a DLink DI524 router and for some reason one of my computers is very slow in returning web pages, playing games online and even accessing programs off it's hard drive. I have run the spyware programs that I am aware of, Spybot, Adaware, Norton and have eliminated some things but it still runs slow. The main computer is a 1.8 ghz machine with 1 gig ram, xp professional runs fine. The second computer is a 2.4 ghz, 632mg ram xp home. I have roadrunner cable with a toshiba modem. I have updated my router with the newest software and nothing seems to work. Are there some other settings I can change on my second computer that would speed it up? I was thinking of adding more ram? Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Phil

    Adding more RAM would help.
Getting rid of Norton and picking another AV would help.
Plenty of options here - http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20
Take a look at this thread for other basic ways to speed up your comp.

I don't really think your router is the cause of your slow down but after doing these suggestions, if you still have problems, come back with a description of what is happening. Hope this helps.

Excellent. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll give it a try.

Definitely read the advice at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650 and use CCleaner, as suggested there.

I'd also visit dslreports.com or another Internet connection speed testing site and run speed tests with both computers and compare them. You should get nearly identical results with the two computers. dslreports.com also has a Tweaks test which will give you tips if the test detects ways in which you could improve Internet speed, and they had a free tweaking tool called DrTCP that can be used to change settings in your system that affect Internet connection speed.
