Hey guys, I am going to be buying a second hard dive for my computer, since the original 40G HD is getting full. What do I have to do to install this second HD and still keep the first? I don't know much about computers, so use small words, hehe;) I appreciate the help

Hi Stephen.. Just put new HD alongside the old using connector on Ribbon (in the middle, slave) Then put your Jumper settings to SLAVE'' on the new one and thats it, just boot up and away ye go.. Your computer should now recognise 2 Hard Drives :) dont do as I always do forget to.. connect a power lead to the new HD

I've never had any problems with component's bought at a lower cost, simply because I didn't pay for a brand name. If you want to pay more, that's fine, I don't see the point. If it breaks, it's going to break, no matter the price paid.

Why would you pay $99 for an unknown quantity when you can get the Western Digital for $89?

Ok guys, got my second drive, hooked it up as the slave and followed the jumper settings for slave. Now my computer will not boot past the BIOS screen with this HD connected. I don't know if it's a problem that I have HD's from 2 different companies(Maxtor and Western Digital). Any help would be great:) Thanks

Is the first drive set to master? Or possibly master with slave present. I got a computer that had a single drive set to... Single drive. Wouldn't work with my second one until I changed that.

Think that may be the problem Triaxx..now I just got to find the jumper settings for my Maxtor:rolleyes:

The maxtor I'm looking at has the jumpers identified on the bottom of the drive with the numbers 42 at one end of the jumpers and 50 at the other. On the top of the drive it clearly labels the settings for jumper 50 as follows: Master/Single = On; Slave = Off.
    Hope this helps.

Ok, everytime I make progress, something else goes wrong:confused: Now I am able to boot my computer and start Windows. Everything works fine until I try to install the new HD. When it tries to partition my computer locks up solid. Any ideas? I'm dumb, lol

Any ideas guys? When I go into the disk manager, my computer see the new HD, but it's not initialized. When I try to initialize, my computer locks up solid. Could this be a problem with my new HD? The new HD also starts spinning and stops quickly over and over. I'm slow with computers, but my old HD doesn't do that. Thought it could be a problem. Thanks guys

I had something similar trying to install my Seagate. *beats head on keyboard* I had to use their program to partition and format it. Does Western Digital have something like that?

It has a disk that came with it to partition, but that also freezes up my computer

Hmmm... What's running on windows? Might it be a firewall problem? I know I've had them mess with some program installations. If there's too much stuff running in windows, that might be freezing it.

Scratch that previous post. There is something really wrong here:confused: Everything looked ok, I downloaded a game to my new HDD which was my E drive. Then when I went to play the game, there was no E drive on my computer. It doesn't show up anywhere anymore. Anybody know what might be going on here? I can't even uninstall or reinstall the game on my 1st HDD because the computer still sees it on an E drive that doesn't seem to exist now. AHHHHHHHH!!! hehe. Thanks to anyone who can help me sort this out. All I wanted was some more storage space, lol:rolleyes:

My HDD came with that program. I try to plug the hard drive back in and it works for a short time, then disappears again. I left it plugged in overnight, and just got up and a write error was on the screen. It said something like there was a Write error for the E:/ drive, there may be a problem with hardware or the network connection. Is there any way that this could again be a bad HDD? I find it hard to believe that I could get 2 bad HDD's in a row:(

Try swapping cable's with your CD-ROM. That might be what's gone bad. I can't think of any thing else.

Yea, I have a few of these cables that I have swapped out now. Still having same problem. I looked at the Western Digital support site, and if I follow their steps of t-shooting the clicking noise, I again have a defective HDD. This is really hard to believe, 2 bad HDD's in a row?? Something else is gotta be going on:mad:

    Following on from Traxx's post,

What wattage is your PSU? may not have enough juice to power an extra drive, try unplugging a Cd drive and see if the 2nd HD shows up.

Is the drive also listed in the Bios? also maybe worth clearing cmos as that can sometime make newly installed hardware act flaky, to clear cmos take the battery out for 5 mins ( bear in mind any changes you have done to the setting s in the bios will be gone and need setting again so best to make a note of any settings you have manually changed )
