I have an old Dell l667r to which I want to add a second IDE drive (a Maxtor 2 GB!) for automated backups. The latter drive shows up in the BIOS of the Dell machine as the primary slave, but I neither can see the drive from within Win98SE, nor can I boot to a floppy and see the drive in order to format it. Do I need to run FDisk just to be able to type the appropriate letter at the DOS prompt and have the OS "see" the drive? I think the drive was formatted on the prior machine with EZ-BIOS and may thus be an unrecognizable drive format for the Win98SE system (I loaded the Maxtor 2 GB onto my XP Pro box and it saw it fine). I just don't understand why the BIOS could see the drive, and yet I cannot even switch to it from a DOS prompt. Any thoughts?

make sure the jumpers are set correctly one master one slave. make sure that the ide is pushed in correctly (red line nearest to power) and make sure it is on the right part on the dual IDE cable. then run fdisk... If that doesn't work then i dunno....
