Second installed burner won't read

I have installed a second dvd burner, identical to the first (HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA H22N by LG). I can burn to it, but cannot read anything off of it without getting read errors. Debating whether to just bring it back, for it may be a bad burner, but thought I would ask around a bit first off since there may be some setting or something I need to check.

I have a P4 3.0 GHz on a P4P800SE m/b, 2 Gigs RAM, I disconnected a hard drive to allow me to connect the second optical drive. So now I have my C drive (master) and the second optical drive (slave) on one IDE cable, and the secondary IDE has my E drive and first optical drive. I also have another SATA HDD. Power supply is a 450 W NSpire.

I can put a movie into the second optical drive and it plays the movie, but just don't ask it to read anything so that I can copy to an image on my HDD etc. I use Nero Ultra 6 to make my images etc. Wanted the second optical to take some of the strain off the first.

    Any suggestions appreciated

JUst wondering if it would make any difference if I put both opticals on the secondary IDE cable and have the two HDD's sharing the primary IDE....?

Apparently it did make a difference...for the drives all work fine now. Keep the opticals to the secondary IDE and the HDD's to the primary.
