    Hi there,

I've been posting in the Malware Removal forum about this problem and they've not found anything so have pointed me in your direction.

I am unable to get access to secure web sites (e.g. banking, hotmail, facebook and others). This problem occured around the time I did a load of file and program deletes as my C Drive was getting full - but I don't have a record of what was deleted.

I have Norton 2002 but in none of my User accounts can I get access to change any of the settings and I'm guessing it is the firewall that is causing my problem. I thought I'd be smart and just purchase a 2008 edition but I can't load that because it needs me to remove 2002 version but I can't. I get the message "A norton internet security account with supervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product" when I use the add/remove programs function. I've also tried downloading the removal tool but that's another site that I can't get access to.

    Many thanks
    Mark

    Thanks.

However, when I try to download it doesn't work - I get the page telling me that I can't access the page I want?

Also, this link I think only gets rid of 2003 versions onwards (mine is 2002).

I've also downloaded "Perfect Uninstaller" which is one of your sponsored links but when I get to the bit where I need to register to get it to actually do the uninstalling of Norton I can't access the page (where I assume i have to pay - which i'm happy to do if it will just fix my problem)

If you have your windows disc- (XP ?) Try start, run, type in
    sfc /scannow
and put your disc in the cd rom drive- a small block with a slow moving blue line will come up, and may ask to retry to find any missing, or, corrupted windows files, and replace them- (after cleanups, sometimes a program takes an important file with it,)
otherwise, you can try the onboard file repair , CHKSK /R.
Another way is to right click my computer, left click manage, then click disc management, then right click the partition, or your hard drive (C ), click properties, click tools, click the error checking (check now) tick both boxes on the next part, then click the start button on that area- if it does not check immediately, it will when you reatart.

    Thanks.

I don't have the XP disc - everything was pre-loaded when I bought the PC (Compaq Presario) so couldn't run that.

When you say about CHKSK/R I'm not sure what you mean I should do?

I have followed your instructions in the last sentence and run that - it hasn't resolved my problem though.

Do you think it is my Norton firewall that is causing the problem? If so, how can I get around the message that keeps coming up when I try to do anything to edit / remove the program. "A norton internet security account with supervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product".

    Regards

I do apologise, I never realised that I had misspelt the CHKDSK /R.
Go to start, run, type in CHKDSK /R, AND CLICK O.K.
Note the space before the hyphen.

Sorry, got to go- but have you tried restarting in safe mode, and then unistalling ?

Great thanks - I've done all of that and I'm making some progress...

    The good news:
    - Norton Anti-Virus 2002 - gone
    - My problems accessing websites - solved

    The bad news:
I still can't get rid of Norton Internet Security 2002 (which i need to do so that I can install the 2008 version that I've already bought). I'm worried that I have minimal protection as it stands.

To reitereate, I've done all the steps to manually remove it (although some of the Registry Keys were not available to delete) and I still can't get rid of it using the Add/remove option within the Control Panel - I get a message "Internal Error 2753.
    NMain.exe.82434E30_423F_11D3_AF4B_00600811C705"

Any more advice would be gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Hi

Have you managed to also run the Norton Uninstaller Tool? as this specifically hunts down files left over that could block your install of the newer version.

You could give this uninstaller application a go http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html

Halo has offered a tool, to help-

You stated that you had lost your discs/or never had any.(and, like many , never built a set when you got the computer). Hp support might be able to supply you with a recovery disc, if you are running XP, AND THE MODEL is still in their database, if you use the following link, as they cater for compaq.-You will need to type in your exact model- If you have lost your manuals, it is often on the rear of the computer.

Very many thanks to everyone who has given help and advice - I'm now completely sorted.

This is the third time, due to my own errors, that you guys have fixed my problems and all for free - if only everyone in teh world was so generous.

We are all very pleased to see that the problem(s) are now solved.
For others with similar problems, you would help them by giving us a 'run down', on which bit helped in what way, so that others can see how you managed to solve the problem, and telling others if different/various bits of advice solved which part of it.
In particular, this uninstaller application at http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html that Halo offered.

    Thanks for letting us know.

    :)

    Hi,

Ok - to summarise what got this sorted. Well, lots of attempts to run stuff from symantec just wouldn't work because of the underlying problem that i couldn't actually access the websites to download the fix.

So, what initially unlocked the door to website access was running the manual removal suggested by chainjm on 25 August.

That still didn't remove NIS and neither the removal tools from symantec nor add/remove programs helped.

The final solution was the revo uninstaller which sorted it first time. What I would say though is that as a "non-geek", when I'd run the program it was asking me to delete absolutely loads of stuff from the registry which I was quite nervous about doing as there were over 1000 items. However, I went for it and it was OK.

I also used revo to get rid of the remnants of Kazaa which have been sitting dormant in my machine for about 3 years. Fab!

    Thanks again
    Mark
