I wonder why Windows Security tells me that my AVG Free is not working even though I check that sit and it says everything is up to date. I only have Vista Basic Home Edition.

    Hi gatorman

Moving your thread to software, as this may not be a malware issue but a conflict between AVG and Windows Security Centre (WSC), could try the below to see if we can resolve this.

Click Start and in the Start Search box, type CMD and when it shows in the search list right click it and choose Run as Administrator (as you need to be running this command prompt as full admin) then at the prompt type

winmgmt /verifyrepository ~ and hit enter, if the message back is "WMI repository is not consistant" then type this winmgmt /salvagerepository ~ and hit enter, its very likely as it did it to me last time I run this command fail first time so type the same winmgmt /salvagerepository a number of times hitting enter after each go until it runs ok, then once run reboot PC and check WSC.

What version of AVG are you using? if on Version 7, then try updating to version 8.5, but uninstall the old version first.

Has this just happened or only happened if you updated to AVG from another Antivirus, I mention this as if you had another Antivirus application on your PC, it may not have uninstalled fully and even a left over .dll file can cause WSC to not recognise your default AV. SO what was your previous AV (as we can advise if their is a removal tool available to remove the remaining parts)?

Thanks Halo but my computer is telling me that it is not recognized as an internal or external command. I typed in verbatim: *winmgmt/verifyrepository* and then hit Enter. Was this not correct? Oh yes I also did the same as above with *winmgmt/salvagerepository*.

I have only run AVG on this computer after I dumped Mcafee when I first bought this, my first computer, but I will mention I just did a microsoft update. Updated to AVG 8.0 just a little while ago also.

The commands need a space, so if you actually typed
instead of winmgmt /verifyrepository that might be why you see an error.

Very likely as Plodr mentions the space was missing, very easy to do. Also do make sure that you run CMD from the elevated position as many admin commands dont work if you dont in Vista.

Click Start and in the Start Search box, type CMD and when it shows in the search list right click it and choose Run as Administrator (as you need to be running this command prompt as full admin, see image I just made, which may help) then at the prompt type the commands in the order as listed earlier.

May also be worth as the earlier versions of AVG did have issues, to uninstall and install the latest one AVG Free 8.5
