Security on Win 7 and XP Encryption, Firewall, Av

    After searching the forum I didn't see anything recent.

    What is the best way to protect the drives on our PCs and my laptop?
    I was reading about TruCrypt and Firewalls and all kinds of things but I am not "software" literate :-o

    My laptop is running windows 7 home, the PCs are all XP pro, to be upgraded to 7 eventually (is there any inexpensive way to upgrade 3 PCs?)

    The Laptop has the Win 7 firewall and the Norton's internet security it came with. The PCs all had comodo firewalls and AVG av until both programs decided I had to choose one or the other.

    All are connected to the DSL Modem via a D-Link wireless router.

    Sorry for all the questions but I am now thoroughly confused!! Any and all advice will be gratefully appreciated!!

    Router gives you firewall security. Windows firewall is best just left on.
    Nortons gives you additional security but it is overkill, you really just needed an antivirus but no harm done.

    Why do you want to protect your drives? Typically people do this to hide things from prying eyes but unless you have a need, I wouldnt bother.

    No real inexpensive way to upgrade 3 pc's but if you shop around you might find a deal on Amazon.com or Ebay.

    I'm new to Win 7 so left everything on that came with the new laptop, re: the nortons :-D

    as for the drives, just wanted a secure way to protect passwords and account numbers and such.

    I can always dream microsoft will be nice :cool

    oh... firewall on the router... does that need setup???
