Security questions

Good morning

I am looking for advice on securing my pc. I already have the newest free version of AVG and AdAware. Can you give me some recommendations as to what I should have on my pc to protect it?

Any other neat software I MUST have is also welcome

hijackthis is great. the newest version is 1.99.0 - however you have to be very very careful - always have someone on the forums check your log before you fix anything. and/or go to this site:
http://hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
copy and paste your log and it will analyze it for you(it only takes a second or two).

 

oops! i just learned that on this forum you shouldn't post your hjt logs until someone asks you to!

 

if you have highspeed (not dialup) connection, put the free version of zone alarm on a.s.a.p.

i am also assuming you have a pc, not a mac? also assuming you are running xp- if so, after installing zone alarm, turn off the xp firewall.

and when you have more questions (i almost said 'if', but the questions have never stopped for me, lol) please post what operating system you have, system specifications, etc, and i wish you happy holidays.

edit- and i should learn how to read, you only mentioned that it was a pc two or three times, lol.

 

Spybot is another good freeware and practically a must these days.

The other day, after receiving Check & Get as a Christmas gift i went on to check favorites (that's what this program does) and caught a virus! Fortunately Avast AV was there to the rescue! How can the simple fact of checking a hyperlink be the cause of a virus attack beats me, but now i'm testing ZoneAlarm's Pro edition with AV and other security checks. Anyone satisfied with this program? It's not listed here at MG's in the Security section so i guess it either hasn't been tested yet or is not worth the mention...

Are there any other low resource consuming effective anonymizer programs out there? Not too expensive too? Just spotted www.the-cloak.com but have never heard of this program before.

 

Just a small correction here. Zonealarm will be just as effective on a dialup connection
