If I am using Steam to play CS online, is it safe to turn off ZoneAlarm, SpywareBlaster, and all the other little knick knacks? I know ZoneAlarm uses resources that would definitely be better used in the game. I just dont want to compromise security for gaming. I am thinking that I am safe as long as I do not browse around without ZoneAlarm on.

If I game online I tend to leave the FW and AV on, but do make sure all other background apps or at least have minimal tasks running. Spywareblaster is fine as it doesnt run in the background, only time its active is when your updating or checking settings.

you coudl do a quick test and see if CS is any quicker when the FW is off.

i would not turn my firewall off while playing online games, after all, your still connected to the net while your gaming, and open to attacks.
