So I'd like to build a new PC using some parts from my present PC. I'd like the system to be optimized for Photoshop work.. Mostly photo editing... Here's what I'll be keeping...

    1) 2TB 7200rpm Hard Drive
    2) 600watt power supply
    3) Nvidia GeForce 8800GT (maybe?)
    4) The case?
    5) Another 250MB 7200rpm drive
    6) DVD Drive, mouse, keyboard, etc...
    7) External 2TB USB 3.0 LaCie Drive

    As for the upgraded parts..

I want to build around an Intel i5-2500k chip. Here are my questions...

    1) I need suggestions for a specific motherboard
    2) I'll likely get 4x4GB Ram... I've seen some recommendations for Gskill Ripjaw DDR3 1600Mhz Ram. This ok?
    3) I'm considering adding a 90GB SSD drive (OCZ Vertex 2 or 3)? I don't know how best to set it up...
    a) Boot Drive with Windows and PHotoshop installed on it?
    b) Just a scratch disk for Photoshop?
    c) Some other setup?
    4) Is it going to be significantly worthwhile to upgrade the GPU?
    5) Should I get a new case? Power Supply?

Thanks in advance for the advice! In regards to parts, please make specific suggestions if you can.

#1) I know you want stability so Intel and then ASUS motherboards come to mind. Specifics depend on options/expandability and price.
#2) The Ripjaws will be fine, I'm assuming here that you won't overclock.
#3) SSD would be best used for boot-up and PS for quick startup, using it as a scratch pad but it will be much quicker for sure.
#4) Probably will be a good idea as the 8800gt is getting old and could possibly be a bottleneck if you go with SSD as a scratch pad. I think a modestly priced($200) GTX560 will be just fine for rendering large sized pics quickly.
#5) Case doesn't really matter much as long as you have good airflow through it, a minimum of a 120mm fan in front and in the back. As to the power supply, if it's a quality 600W then you'll be fine but if it cost $20 or $30 bucks I'd scrap it for for a Corsair, Antec etc.

What's the make of your PSU and can it handle the above needs?

I assume you already have one of those expensive CRT'S for colour correction.

I'm not a chopper but those are only my hardware opinions from experience.

BTW, you could also get a Western Digital Velociraptor 300GB(fast) for about the same price as the 90GB SSD. I'm one who thinks that they are still too pricey( I have a 40GB). It's all up to you of course, you got some choices to make.
