    Hey guys,

    I have a 4TB Seagate Backup+ External Drive.

I have the drive setup on a network and have it set to share with the writes that network users can change my files.

I simply cannot figure this out and every search with similar problem seems to MAC related.

I can create a file in the drive from another computer and can delete that file.

I cannot move or delete any file that originated on the host computer.

    What am I doing wrong?

    OS...

    Windows XP Professional

    Need more information.

Check the permissions of the files on the host computer. Make sure it has read and write privileges for the logged in user.

Your OS is XP; that's the problem.

I didn't think XP itself could be the problem, as I use a 2 TB drive with XP Pro 32-bit. I'm aware to the 4 GB RAM limitation though.

Guess, I an just on the verge of not being recognized.

I think you guys figured it out.

I am ONLY having issues with the external drives over 2TB.

Sigh. Guess an upgrade is in order.

    I have one last question....

If I have a newer computer and the external drives are connected to that computer but all the other computers in the network are still running xp.

Will I still have problems with the other computers accessing the files?

You can partition the hd into two - 2GB partitions; then all the computers will be able to see and use it.
Now you can't format it within windows because it can't see it but you could run a linux live CD and format it with that. (I'd be very careful that you don't partition your internal hard drive.)

    Thanks.

I have a system off the network that has Vista on it. Could I partition the external drives on that also?

    Sorry, I've never run Vista.

I have a Seagate 4Tb back up + and foolishly went to repartition it in Windows 7 64bit Enterprise which failed abysmally. I am hoping your Parted Magic works for me as I have already bought one format program that failed. Wish me luck and thank you so much for the hints and tips, you guys are always a great resource for the curly ones.
