selective install for soundcard?

i've got an ac97 onboard soundcard that i'm happy with, the only thing it lacks is midi support. i've got an older aopen pci soundcard with a midi port i was thinking about using, but i'm kind of worried about driver conflicts and the like.

is there some way i can just install the midi port of the aopen soundcard and have it ignore the sound ports?

 

You might get away with it. It really depends on whether or not XP will try to install drivers automatically. If it does I don't think you can be selective like that. If your lucky it will install the port but not the audio and then you would just leave it with yellow marks in the Device Manager. You really should look into a usb/Firewire midi hub though, they have much less latency (delay) than the old game port used as midi port.

I think what you are really saying is that there is no GamePort (15 pin D) on the mother board. The gameport contained the Midi connection. Look in you BIOS Setup and see f there is a way to shut off the onboard Sound. If it's there you may not have a problem using the PCI soundcard. If it's not there it may be automatic and worth a try if you are confident about trying such. I used to use the game port connection for Midi years ago.

Edit: Forgot to mention, all the Sequencer software folks sell a Midi PCI board that won't interfer with the sound card. You might Google for on of those.
