First of all I My brother just upgraded his copmuter so I got all his old parts to do my mum up a good ol cheapy...

But the problem is I went an bought an AMD SEMPRON 2500+ (socket A) for my board I set it all up and it reads my CPU as an AMD ATHLON and it is only running at 1.05ghz but the AMD SEMPRON should be running at 1.75ghz.
I flashed the bios so it would support the Sempron but now it shows it is a Sempron 3200+ but still running at 1.05ghz..
Does anyone know why this would be happening...

    Specs...

    MSI kt4v (basic)
    Amd Sempron 2500+
    1gb ddr400 ram (2x 512bm sticks)
    WD 80gb ide hdd
    400w psu
    Asus 7600gs graphics card (AGP)

It all runs sweet except for the cpu recognition...

    Thanks In advance...

Double check your strapping, I had a similar problem with my Athlon, it isn't always obvious, but there are still straps on the motherboard for front side bus (FSB) and other functions. They have to be set correctly to get the optimum speed. The BIOS also has settings that need to be correctly set.

Do you have the motherboard manual?

What do you mean by strapping??
I have the manual which I just downloaded from the MSI website.. I will see what I can find... and will let you know

    Thanks for the reply

Your motherboard is set for 100mhz FSB by default; it is auto-sensing the multiplier at 10.5 (which is correct). 100mhz FSB x 10.5 multiplier = 1050mhz, which is what it reads now. If you change the FSB to 166mhz, you will get the correct speed of 1750mhz for your Sempron. 166mhz FSB x 10.5 multiplier = 1750mhz.
As for the motheboard saying it's an Athlon, and it's actually a Sempron.... I wouldn't worry about that too much. As long as the speeds are correct, it doesn't really matter what it's called. The BIOS didn't even support the Sempron CPUs until release v1.B (the last release is v1.C) so they probably never added the Sempron text to the supported CPU identifiers; as long as the math is correct, the "label" is unimportant. Then again, once you get the speeds correct, it may just say you have a Sempron 2500+ installed ;)

I changed it from 100 to 166 and the temperature shot up from idle of 42'c to now idle of 50'c is that bad or not....
and does it really matter that cpu is actually recognized as a sempron 3200+ instead of the sempron 2500+ that it should..

    Thanxxx

Temps in the 50s are OK... a bit warm but not much to worry about. I used to run an Athlon 2400 XP that idled at 56c, but under a load it only went up to 58-59c... as long as you stay under 60c or 65c you should be OK. The older AMD chips have always run a bit warm.....

Ok.. i just changed it from 100 to 166 at 10.5x multiplyer and saved the bios setting and now it recognizes the cpu as a sempron 2500+ @ 1.75ghz weird how it recognized cpu after I changed the speed but o'well it works...
    THANXXX Heaps for your help...

The reason the temp went up is faster electronics does generate more heat (the only time transistors in digital mode generate heat is while switching, faster means more switching states per second).

My Athlon runs at 59C, which is a bit hot, but normal.

It does mean it will wear out faster, heat isn't good long term. If you had left your computer under clocked it would have likely lasted a bit longer, but then, we want the speed long term.

    As said before, it's normal.

Ok since i have changed it from 100 to 166 the system has not been stable... it will just randomly shut down... so i changed it back to about 133 and its running at 1.4ghz as an amd sempron 3200+ (again) do i have to change the voltage or spread spectrum or anything else.. or could it have something to do with the ram.. cause when i had it at 166 it would say

dram timing = 333mhz (or something like that ) cas latency = 3

but since i have changed it to 133 it says
dram timing = 400mhz (or something like that)

    Is this normal...??

    thanx again...
