'send To Desktop' Lacks '(create Shortcut)' In Win7

SEND TO DESKTOP causes a file to MOVE rather than creating a desktop shortcut to it. Context menu offers a CREATE SHORTCUT that works, but I expect 'send to desktop' to likewise create a shortcut - however it does not. Is there a tweak to correct this ? I have already looked at C:\users\username\appdata\roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo to no avail. I suspect I may have to tweak the Registry - but WHERE ?, and then WHAT to change ?

Do you have the 'Desktop (create shortcut)' file in the SendTo folder?

I did have that. Then in an attempt to correct the faulty functioning, I deleted it from there and also from Default user. I know I can recreate that entry, but it does NOT now appear in the SendTo of Context menu. So even the COPYING (which I do not want) has been disabled.

I ALWAYS have the 'Hide extensions' unchecked. I had already recreated the link as you suggest in the second 'paragraph'. Just like the original entry about which my post is, it causes COPYING instead of the creation of a shortcut. That is why I think a registry tweak is required.

Have a look at these Registry Keys.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\SendTo

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\UserLibraryFolder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\SendTo

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\SendTo

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\UserLibraryFolder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\SendTo

Do they all have the following Value Data?

Not sure whether a restore point would have any effect on Send To, probably not, but nothing to lose by trying it.

The issue is on a remote PC, so I can not just access it at will. I will respond as soon as I have had a chance to check.

Have had a chance to look - the value data asked about is in all four of those registry entries.
I have done the following suggestions :

    Open the SendTo folder.
    Right-click > New > Text Document.
    Rename it Desktop (create shortcut).DeskLink.

but Desktop does not re-appear in the SendTo context menu.

I had re-posted this matter in slightly reworded form, when I could not access THIS thread. Max Turner replied, but when I clicked on 'his' VIEW THIS THREAD, I got "

The URK he referred me to : https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...-missing/b3453754-9819-4a9e-89d0-8dd29d9283aa
    did NOT help.

Can you copy a file from your PC to the remote PC?

I don't know if I can copy a file between the PCs. I was able to copy files from a USB stick to that remote PC when I was near it yesterday

Copy the Desktop (create shortcut) file on your PC to both SendTo folders of the other PC.

Will do when I get the chance.

I misunderstood your instruction - MY fault - they are quite clear. I used various methods to recreate the entries in the Users folders EXCEPT for copying from MY PC to the remote one. None of them added the required entry to the Context Menu.

Would sfc /scannow or Tweaking.com work for this? Pretty sure an inplace repair installation would do the job without you losing any files or programs (only Windows updates), but sounds like you might lose alot of custom settings if you've been doing more of this type of tinkering.

In August I ran scannow sfc and no errors were found. Tweaking.com is new to me. I have not done much tinkering on that remote PC.

Eldon is one of the masters of Tweaking. I'll let him speak for it for fear of being spotted an imposter. Actually, I've always gone with the Windows fixes to get around trouble spots.

The in place repair I can only call for lack of a better expression..."a trip". It fixes Windows without breaking anything of yours, but at the price of updates which is a hassle in itself. Tweaks are gone. Since you don't have any maybe that would work for you, but you will need a W7 installation disk of the same OS you have i.e. SP1/32 or 64 bit/Home or Pro or Ultimate. If you have or can get one, I or someone else can introduce you to the PC guru named Britec on YouTube LOL. He has a great video on this...

'at the price of updates' in what way ?

SP1/32 or 64 bit/Home or Pro or Ultimate - I know it is NOT 32, the rest I would have to check on - next time I get access.

It obliterates all updates. No other way to explain it. Your system will not have a single Windows update anywhere to be found. Program updates will be intact, only the Windows ones are removed. It's not that big of a deal, though, since you can just redownload them.

I ran one of these last year, and it's actually really underrated for Windows 7. I would say it compares to the system refresh of Windows 10 pretty darn favorably.
