I am inquiring about sending messages to another computer that shares the same internet line as mine. I understand there a few ways to do this, net send and winpopup. I have tried both of these yet to no avail. One computer is running XP and the other laptop running 98, so is there another way to accomplish this task? Also could anyone direct me in the direction of 'networking', By having two computers sharing the same internet through a router are they considered on the same network? That may be my problem that I have no idea how I would find out or make the computers on the same network. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes the two computers sharing a connection on a router are networked.
They should both have IP addresses from the same range.
Like one could be 192.168.1.2 and the other 192.168.1.3
You should be able to ping each one from the other to establish if you
    have basic connectivity.

98 does not have net send, that is correct. Do you know of any other options I have to send messages? Thanks.

Winpopup is not available on XP. I don't think there is a way to communicate between the two due to the fact that they are on two different OS.

    scott,
just because you're using the same router to connect to the internet, it doesn't mean you're on the same Network.
Yes, you're phisycally on the same line, since you are sharing the gateway. but your network settings, like workgroup policies or domain policies will not match if you don't configure them correctly.
If your router is doing the DHCP, and you set both PCs to "obtain IP automatically", your TCP/IP ranges will match fine.
However, you have to configure the workgroup settings to be matched. If you want your workgroup named "Home", go into system property (xp) and change the workgroup name to "home". Go into network property (win98) and do the same.
Net send will not work properly if you're not on the same workgroup or domain.
Also, you can always use winpopup by installing it with win98 CD or just copy the winpopup.exe to xp's system32 directory.

    OOOOPS,
sorry, that line is totally wrong... you can't just copy winpopup.exe and make it work... it seems it requires more dll.
I did some research and there are software out there that can handle this.
    called "LanTalk" or "winmessenger".
Also, I think you can install messenger service on 98 machine using XP CD... but I will test this and let you know.

Thanks for the networking help, I now have a grasp on it all. And I found some information that has told me that it is not possible to net send on 98, so that is out of the question. There is LANTalk, I may look into that.

Thanks for all your comments and support.
