Already ran READ ME and RUN ME steps, and posted in malware forum, but they told me that they didn't see a virus or malwary and I may have a software issue.

Have Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 64-bit, running IE9 and AVG free. I have 174GB free of 221GB on my Cdrive. When I try to open anything, which not only includes IE, but even trying to open my Computer or trying to click on the start button, it either takes forever to respond, or I get a "program is not responding" message. Even trying to restart the computer, I can eventually click on it, but the computer never restarts. It has gotten to the point that I have to everything in safe mode(including this message) to use my computer. There are spurts where the computer will respond, and I can get to IE and Google quickly, but it usually ends up freezing up at some point.

I have also noticed that my background (generic Toshiba blue) is enlarged to the point that the Toshiba logo is fuzzy and enlarged and behind the clock and date on the lower right of the screen.

I appreciate any help on this issue as I would like to be able to use my computer without wanting to throw it out the window every day! Thank you very much for your assistance!

    What model Toshiba?
Did it come with windows 7 or did you upgrade? (I notice you had a problem with a Vista computer and just wondering if it is the same computer).

I have Toshiba Satellite C655 that came with windows 7

The Vista was another laptop that has since stopped working due to it being the HP DV6700 entertainment laptop that had the defective Nvida driver that causes it to turn on then immediately off. I only know this from reading all the complaints when you google it. If you know of a fix for that, I'll take it, because there is still pics and files on that computer I'd like to get from it! :)

    Thanks for the link...

As for CPU on my Toshiba (by the way, I am in safemode, so I don't know if that makes any difference or not) it moves from 0% to 1% with physical memory at 24%

When you are in "Safe Mode", Windows only loads the most basic drivers to get it running.

Are you experiencing issues while in Safe Mode, or just when booting normally?

I am in safe mode because it's the only way my computer will respond to clicking on things. And it's the only way that I can get IE to work without getting the 'not responding' messages everytime I go to the websites - it is the only way that I can respond promptly on this forum too. Computer works fine in safe mode. I will restart and try to get the cpu and memory usage in regular mode for you.

Ok, I restarted in regular mode, and was able to open task manager. The CPU fluxuated quickly from 96% to 2% to 100 to 1 to 18 to 22 to 47, 24, 9, 76, 9 etc. As this fluxuated, the memory started at 35% then went up to 36% and 37%. I am only running the operating system from what I can see.

Also when I went to restart to safe mode, it took a minute or so after I clicked on restart for it to start to shut down.

I glanced at a few of your logs and I didn't see any unusual services but you might try this troubleshooter http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

See if you disable non-microsoft services if normal mode works. If it does then it would be worthwhile to go through the process of enabling half of the services etc... to figure out which one is causing the problem.

***Just to rule out AVG: you installed AVG after you were already experiencing the slowdown--correct?

    k4maz Private E-2

can I use the troubleshooter in safemode? Or do I have to try it in regular mode?

also, how do I disable non-microsoft services?

AVG was on the computer before I had the slowdown, but I uninstalled it to run the READ ME FIRST in the malware forum. I have since reinstalled it. Should I remove it and try something else?

sorry, just clicked on the troubleshooter and I answered my first two questions.

I've just read that AVG can cause problems on some computers. I don't know the specifics of the problems other than slow downs. You could try Avast or Avira but if you continued to have slowdowns with AVG uninstalled it probably was not AVG.

Yes you can use msconfig from safemode.
In step D. you see at the bottom left is the box to hide Microsoft services. You want to check that box so that the MS services are not shown. Then you click the disable all button to disable all non-MS services. Then reboot.

See if there is any difference in response time. If no change then you know it is not a particular service causing the problem and you can go back to msconfig an re-enable all the services. And then we have to figure out what to try next.

I followed your instructions, rebooted, and while I was able to get on IE pretty quickly, the webpages eventually took a long time to come up, and were not responding. Tried to click on a few of my desktop programs and they did not open immediately, taking a long time for the window to open completely.

Also, when i am in safemode, I tried to uninstall AVG and got a message that read..."the windows installer service could not be accessed. this can occur if the windows installer is not correctly installed. please contact your support personnel for assistance."

Silly question, but when is the last time you did a "Disk Cleanup"?

I use Cceleaner, and like it.

  15. k4maz

    k4maz Private E-2

yes I also have ccleaner and have used it several times. it doesn't get much out.

Let's see, there was not a significant change in performance so you might as well go ahead and enable the services that were disabled. Perhaps the Windows installer problem is related to the disabling but that is a MS service so it should not have been disabled.

Does uninstall AVG work in Normal mode?

  17. k4maz

    k4maz Private E-2

I am in normal mode right now, and internet explorer seems to be working, but it is pretty slow compared to how it was working in safe mode

I tried opening AVG and the window only partially opened, then it said not responding. I tried this time in normal mode to uninstall AVG and I did not get that windows uninstaller message. Should I go ahead and uninstall it? It really wasn't causing any problems the first month I had it installed, though. I have tried Avira in the past and still got viruses, is Avast any better? I was told that AVG was the way to go, but if it's making my computer this slow, I will change it.

Use appremover to be sure AVG is completely uninstalled. (I just ran it on several computers to clean off AntiVir).
    http://www.appremover.com/
view the video so you know exactly what you will see when you run it (no install it is an exe file)

I might suggest running MS Security Essentials on your Win 7 64 bit. I run it on my netbook and it is what I replaced AntiVir with on my XP computers too.

computer is moving faster since doing this AVG removal, but I am still having some issues with webpages not responding, and programs on the desktop taking a long time to open programs. Is there anything else that may be causing this?

I also noticed that I cannot change my background on my desktop. I've tried to use pics as my background, but it will not change.

As I mentioned before it is the blue Toshiba background, but is enlarged to the point that the Toshiba logo is enlarged, fuzzy, and you can only see the TOS which is set behind the time and date portiono the the bottom right toolbar.

I'm not sure I can help on the lagging problem.

On the Display, are the rest of the icons and such normal and sharp?

I guess you should check that you have your graphics drivers installed.
Start>type in Device Manager and <enter>
Are there any yellow question/exclamation marks? What does it have listed under Display Adapter and also under Monitor?

We need to see what is running.
Open CCleaner and click on Tools. Then click Startup.
At the bottom right, click the button "Save to text file".
Post the text files as an attachment to your next post here.

Manufacturers add bloatware and also utilities that connect to them to search for updates. That might be causing hangups. I typically disable all of those "look for updates" except in an av and a malware detector program. Everything else, I manually look for and install what I might need.

Device manager does not have any yellow or exclamation points on anything.

    Under display adapter it says:

    Under Monitor it says:

From Control Panel>Display>Choose from left: Adjust Resolution. What is the resolution set out now?

  26. k4maz

    k4maz Private E-2

    1366x768 (recommended)

You have the correct resolution set. So that is not the problem, although your description of the desktop sure sounds like a lower resolution. Do get an error if you choose a Windows built in theme that includes changing your desktop background (Right-click a blank area of desktop and select Personalize and choose a theme)?

I'm not being much of a help here. I'll take a look at your malware thread tomorrow but nothing jumped out at me the first time I looked. I hope someone has some ideas.

Your startup only shows 3 things running: Google Toolbar Notifier (it actually shows twice, one off and one on), MS Security Essentials, and AVG's Uninstaller so I don't see anything there causing a lag.

as the background is so big I would try deleting the file, then reboot and see how it reacts.

Now that I'm thinkin' about it, how old is this HDD/laptop?

And, is it PATA, or SATA?

  31. k4maz

    k4maz Private E-2

my toshiba laptop is not even 1 year old. I don't know what PATA or SATA means.

I have been only able to use the computer or get on the internet through safe mode because the regular mode is lagging very very slowly. Now it's gotten to the point that if I try to switch over to regular mode, the computer boots up normally to the password screen, but when I enter the password, it will not open up to my desktop at all. So I am limited to using my computer only in safe mode.

I was sent here from the malware forum after doing the READ ME steps, and they said it wasn't a malware issue, it was a software issure. I still feel that there is some sort of virus or something because my passwords to this site and yahoo all of the sudden didn't work the other day. I tried running malwarebytes, but it did not find any malware. Should I try going through the READ ME FIRST steps again?

Here is the info on my computer again...
    Toshiba Satellite C655
    183GB free of 221GB memory
    64 bit
    Windows 7
    Internet explorer 9
