I have a serial device (DexDrive) that I want to connect to my computer which, unfortunately, does not have such a port. Thinking myself clever, I purchased a serial-usb adapter.
(This is the same one if you care to look: hxxp://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-TO-RS232-SERIAL-DB9-9-PIN-ADAPTER-CABLE-PDA-GPS_W0QQitemZ380077197849QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCOMP_EN_Cables_Connectors?hash=item380077197849&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1308)

Of course the application wants to look for the device over a com port and will not detect the device, even though it is connected.

I have seen one solution that's a couple years old. Unfortunately it's also a bit vague (hxxp://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=124686) That's the only lead I have so far though.

What I'm basically saying is that I need to connect a serial device through the usb port so that the application can read from and write to it.

Does anyone know any solutions or hints for this?

This http://www.usbserial.com/USBG-232MM.html is more expensive and it says it works in XP and Vista. I don't know if they supply a CD with drivers or it is assumed that the OS already has the drivers.
Here are driver downloads on the site

A cheaper solution, add a serial port by installing a PCI card

this does show a CD so I assume you must load drivers for any serial device to be recognized.

When you plug it in do you see a com port in your device list?
MAybe you need to change its properities to COM 1 or 2 so the dex drive will be seen.

If it comes down to it, I may just have to purchase a different piece of equipment. I'd like to see if there's any way to work with what I have first.

Change the properties to COM? I haven't stumbled upon that just yet. How would I accomplish that?

    Thanks for the feedback.

note: I put up a couple screen shots of what I believe to be the system trying to recognize the device.
In all honesty, I think I may have to cough up the cash for a non-generic adapter or a pci card. (I think I still have a slot open ;p)
