I am having issues, and most i admit is lack of training, that i need some help or an avenue on getting help with. I have Server 2000 with 4 users attached and I need to attach 2 more desktops to the network. I logged in as the administrator and went to "administrative Tools" to add active directory clients but there wasn't a selection in the list. I also needed help in setting up these client's desktops to be recognized by the server. I picked up a copy on Server 2000 from microsoft press but i am completely stuck. Can anyone help. One desktop on the network has under system properties under the network identification tab a Computer Name: desktop7.pgl.com and the Workgroup: workgroup. Anyone have any help they can offer me?

Sure! I usually let AD do the work for me! Here's how:

    1. Go to the workstation, and right-click My Computer
    2. Select 'Properties'
    3. Select the 'Network Identification' tab
    4. Press the 'Netwok ID' button

When prompted, select the options for business network, and then a network with a domain. You'll need the name of the domain, and the credentials of someone with permission to join a workstation to the domain. It should be as simple as following the prompts! This should create a computer account, and you have the option of creating a user account as well.

    Good luck!

Does your Server have Active Directory loaded (via dcpromo)? If your Workgroup is named "Workgroup" is does not sound like its set up as a Domain. A workgroup sounds right with only 4 users, even if you want to add 2 or more. You should just be able to add the new users like you would a small/home network.

Thank you for your replies. I will follow up on your suggestions. I am not sure I believe they are using Active Directory. If they are is there a way I can check? I do have the admin login. I'll check back in a little while. Thanks again.

Sorry, forgot one thing, based on having the desktop7.pgl.com on one desktop, does that mean that pgl.com is the domain? How can I check to see what the domain name is?

I tried both suggestions but have not been successful. When I went into properties and clicked on the Network Id and followed the prompts. I used the administrator login but after putting in the Domain of pgl.com I got the error code: 0x0000267C_DNS_ERROR_NO_DNS_SERVERS, it said "An error occurred whe DNS was quieried for service location".

When I went to another workstation and did an ipconfig it came up with the DNS Suffix being PGL.COM with the IP Address, Suffix, and Default Gateway listed below.

I also went through the home networking route and with no success at all. I couldn't even get an internet connection.

I just don't understand. Can anyone please help me.

Provided you are login as an Admin...You would see "Active Directory Users and Computers" AD Management, AD Sites and Services and AD Domains and Trusts within the Administrative Tools section.

Thats what I thought but I can not see any of the AD choices when I log in at the server. Again I am at my wits end here.

Do you have any Windows server training? Any NT domain knowledge? If not, it will not be an easy process understanding what the folks are trying to tell you here.

Is this for a company or home use? If a company, I waould suggest contracting someone to help you out and show you around server administration. You could pick up a book and get what you need out of it.

Jim, thanks for your reply. I do have the basic NT Domain training and I do have some experience, abet a many years ago, but when I can not see the AD tools mentioned here made me start this string in the first place. The company is obviously scrimping on getting higher level person but it is a friend of mine that asked me for help. I know I can configure this if pointed in the right direction.

    Thanks again. Craig

    Craig,

When you power the workstations, do you get a login prompt? If so, is it a domain login or a workgroup login? If windows 2000 professional, there should be three boxes. If you enter <userid@domain.com>, supply your correct user name and domain name and password, can you login? If so, you have AD. If not, enter your userid in the first box, password in the second and select your domain from the third dropdown box. Successful login? If so, you have an NT style of domain. AD can login in this fashion also but if you can not login with <userid@domain.com>, then you don't have AD.

I only have a username and password when i do login but no dropdown. I was able to get the XP workstation on the network but have to manually login to the server by listing whole network and then clicking on the server. I attempted to configure the login under workgroup instead of domain and don't have the option for user name or password.

Another problem is that, even though I have access to the server and can pull down information from it, ie apps and files, I can not get on the internet. I checked configure/all and it has all of the settings the same except "Type": says "unknown". The others say "hybrid".

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thank you.
