I am a regular Windows user with a new problem.

My Windows 8.1 system has started offering an error message when I attempt to play videos on my system.
    "Server execution failed."

I have had no luck in troubleshooting the problem.

Thanks yo for your help with this.

thank you Ed. Will try it and report back.

I am able to get VLC Media Player to work. It seems a WMP error.

the image below shows what was returned upon typing the first command in.
can you help me decipher it?

I typed the following into the command prompt, as instructed
    1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator (Click Start, Type cmd, right Click Command Prompt, select Run as Administrator)
    2. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press enter.

      I got the following message:

"The module "jscript.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005."

running as admin allowed the command prompts to be entered successfully, but this did not resolve the problem.

I don't use WMP so I've never needed to troubleshoot it :)

Try this MS search, I suggest checking the Technet results (and their follow-up comments) first, there's bound to be some duplication of what you've already tried but there might be a nugget in there.

No, I doubt that the MSE cab error has any bearing on what you're experiencing.

    Thank you for the suggestions.
Technet looks like a valuable resource.

You know, I don't use WMP either, but I am concerned it's malfunction either masking or indicating the source of a bigger problem.
I haven't mentioned this problem here yet, and was hoping pursuing this would reveal the other, as it's difficult to put into words, but I am missing hard-drive space on my C: system SSD.

It is as 256GB drive used only for the software.
Windows accounts for itself and tells me I have 232GB total, and about 800mb available.

By my calculations, which account for Windows again a second time, and by using the various manufacturers minimum drive requirements (which appear overestimated too, btw) I find I should have between 60 and 110-ish available gigs.

Because I work with video, I feel unsafe proceeding with my projects until i solve the problem.
My hunch was that pursuing this obvious issue would lead me to the other, with a bit of over-the-shoulder support.

I appreciate you and Max for having given it some thought on my behalf. Thank you again.
    I'll look into your suggestions.

On your C drive SSD it looks like you have much data that can be deleted.
If it was my system, this is what I would do first:
Run Disk Cleanup - and clean all that is found in that first scan.
Next, run it AGAIN and this time choose the lower left option 'clean system files' and in that list you will probably see, among others, 'Windows (OLD)' and that can be removed if it refers to an update/upgrade older than say 10 days.
You might also have too much space devoted to System Restore, and many unneeded restore points.
Go into System Restore > configure and change the maximum space to something between 5-8%
Now remove any restore points other than the last couple.
    Now restart your system.
The next thing is run the easy to read freeware program TREE SIZE
That program will show you in detail what else is on that C drive and you can delete what you choose, or return here for advice.

    All the best
    Max

I do have an Acronis mirror-drive image I can mount (or incremental full back-up from September and incremental points back to an April Full back-up, but it will be a first for me. Want to learn what I can before using that option

I just ran CCleaner on Friday, so the results were inconsequential megabytes and one restore point with Disk Cleaner.
Moving now to address the System restore allocations you recommend...

Leaving 'as is' unless otherwise advised, given the space issue.

Nothing is 'assigned' it's what's used. You need to open up that section and see what is saved on that C drive under 'users' and whether it could reasonably be moved to a different drive - internal or external. Or files you simply don't need and can be deleted.
On this system I have an SSD C drive, and a separate data drive.
On your C drive you have almost 8 times the data in 'users' than I have, on a 25ogb SSD.
Either way your SSD is too full.

I'm not sure what 'too full' wants to mean in this case.
Windows report about 3.7GB available on drive for this user.
That is in conflict with the capacity, and apparently also with TreeSize.

    Confused by this discrepancy.

  34. dadhammer

    dadhammer Private First Class

Tree Size seems to clearly indicate that this user is using 99%+ of available resources - how did it arrive at that?
That would explain the 3.7 Gigs, but dismisses the 70 missing gigs that represent remaining drive capacity.

Don't allow your System drive (HDD or SSD) to go over 75% full for any length of time, for best performance always keep 25%+ free at all times, more if you have a smaller drive, very large drives might be okay with less. Storage drive free space is usually less of an issue.

"Assigned" in this instance refers to the NTFS cluster size usage for that folder. It's normally better in TreeSize to use (Ctrl+1) Size, rather than (Ctrl+2) Allocated Space (but see the last para.).

If you have 2 or more internal drives, you can use the 'Special Folders' Move Properties tab to make some space on the System drive: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-move-the-special-folders-in-windows-vista/ (same process for later OS').

For Folders that have a large discrepancy between Size and Allocated size (mostly text -type files with a lot of 'empty' space), you can enable File and Folder compression to reduce the space they use: http://www.howtogeek.com/133264/how-to-use-ntfs-compression-and-when-you-might-want-to/

Same drive, some folders compressed = different sizes (Personal 'Special Folders' are on a different drive):

The main system drive - as satrow says whether it is a SSD or HDD - shouldn't be allowed to become so full as system efficiency will deteriorate.
As well as that, an SSD drive is meant for speed and efficiency so it should only store the OS, software and any other data that needs to be accessed regularly. It should not be used as a data drive for storage. The whole point of Tree Size is so that you can see what is saved there and then move much of it elsewhere, or delete it.

I just looked over the TREE TRUNK :p screenshot again and noticed that you have 19+GB in files in the root of the drive.

I'm guessing that 2 of those would be the swap/paging file and a hibernate file.

If you have 8GB of RAM (which I think the figures indicate) you probably don't need a large page file, I suggest setting the page file to a fixed size 2048MB during testing/troubleshooting, if you do use something that needs more than that, try setting a fixed 4092MB min/max instead: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/set-virtual-memory-paging-default.html (but don't use the default/suggested settings there, the object of this initially is to free up some drive space).

Unless it's a notebook perhaps, you really don't need to waste space on hibernation, I'd remove it: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/920730

thank you all for your help.
i hope the following response will illuminate my capabilities and limitations:

I did the best I could with my resources to assemble piecemeal a video edit system running Adobe CC.
I can do nothing about the fact that the software and the OS take up 160GB. That is is an immutable 'given.'
I will not be able to reduce that by any amount.

It is a n ASUS laptop.

I have 24GB out of a possible 32GB of RAM installed.
    The c: drive is a 256GB SSD
    The e: drive is a 1TB 7200rpm hdd

I have an external LaCie 7200RPM connected via Thunderbolt, and other drives to store and swap data on and with.
My back-up Drive is the originally installed 1 x TB 5600rpm laptop drive in an external USB housing.

I will follow your suggestions, and am grateful for them.

However, my C: drive still states through windows that I am low on space and i just cleaned it. The usage% numbers appear to correspond to the user (somehow reflecting 160GB) not the drive (which reflects 232 GB out of the 256GB rating. It is my understanding that this is taking the OS into account. If I am mistaken on that point, please let me know.)

I recognize that this seems obvious to you folks, but I confess ignorance and frustration as to why this 'user' claims to be at 99%+ usage at 160Gigs.
I want to understand why it doesn't reflect the full 232GB available.

I will rerun the cleaning procedures and the TreeSize ananlysis and post results.

In the process I will try to parse the additional advice you've offered prior to these responses. Thank you again for your continued help.

Your software (Program Files & Program Files (x86)) and OS (Windows) take up less than 54 GB.
You need to look at what's in the 157 GB folder. Those files/folders can probably moved to the 1TB hard disk.

Edit: Look at what's in the AppData folder.

    I am very confused.
I can report this: prior to posting I calculated the disk space each piece of software required on disc, and the 160GB more closely matches the manufacturer specs when summed, than the 54GB does.

In other words, Tree Size returned the expected number when it listed 157gb+.

I will follow your direction though.
