I have a friend that has a small business with a server. Do you install Anti-Virus
programs on a server like you do on a client PC?
And if so will Avast work on the server?

    Thanks

Yes, you do need AV software on a server. What OS is the server running on?
Avast should be okay, or there is the option of AVG anti-virus. Clamwin (Windows) or ClamAV (Linux) are totally free, but do not have real time scanning at present.

OK thanks kestrel1 for the info

I don't know what the OS is yet.

Probably Windows 2003 server, in which case all of the AV software I said about should work. Don't be tempted to use Norton or McAfee. You will slow the server down.

Note, you will probably have to install the server version. Unsure about avg. But, avast will require the server version, which is not free. But, cheap for SBS 2003. Though, if running exchange and all that, that requires another app.

So the AV program for the server is different from that of the work station?
The one I run on the work station will not work on the server?

Most anti virus programs detect what OS is installed, if it is a server, then they typically require one to install the server based version, which typically isn't free.

The only thing to do, is give it a shot, and try installing it.

AVG free would work, but if this is a business you are not allowed to use it under the licence. ClamWin however is totally free as it is open source software & it works well on Win server 2003.

Do you know for fact that AVG free version will work on a server platform? On the AVG website it states the free version is not for servers.

ooops, I used to have AVG on our servers, but I totally forgot that it was the paid for version. Sorry for the false info. Anyway, ClamWin does work. I know that for a fact coz that is what we use now. It is set to scan the drives during the night & it emails me if there are any viruses found. These are deleted automatically. I am sure that real time scanning will be introduced soon.
