Hello, about 60 mins ago, I downloaded Service Controller XP(setup_servicecontrollerxpv2.2.61.exe) from the front page of majorgeeks.com. I found it a very cool and useful program. However, after using the in-program links to the author's web site, ZoneAlarm went crazy w/ spyware stuff... I don't care to get into the details right now, since I've been trying to get rid of all the stuff for the past half-hour; quite tired now. Heck, BitDefender is even picking up trojon activity.

Anyway, I now see that the program has been taken off the main page.

Did I get all of the spyware alerts from the program itself, or perhaps the author's web site? If so, you may wish to make note of it on the main page.

Anyway, one way or the other, am I to assume the program was pulled because of it's bundled crap? Or, did I pick something up from another source?

    Thanks.

I am the author of Service Controller XP:-
Its not a SPYWARE but a ADWARE (as mentioned in EULA\LICENCE) it does not get any personal information, also it can be uninstalled seprately:

Go to windows control panel, add/remove programs, then select ATP or NPO or NPG and click remove. You may need to restart your system. This will uninstall our application completely.

Also, it contains ADWARE to make it available for FREE because Nobody DONATES money for my FREE Services and I have to PAY for Internet acess (Costly and Slow Dial-Up) and Hosting Service with a lot of Bandwidth charges, despite adding a ADWARE I have to invest money from my pocket. I hope u understand that, and afterall you can easily uninstall it after installing the app., the app. will work fine without it.
If you guys donate to keep my work going I will not have to include this type of Adware, also my other softwares does not contain this ADWARE.

Of course, he is correct, people dont kick in a few bucks when they enjoy a free tool, but it has been removed mainly because this particular spyware is tagged as a trojan. It made it here because my NOD32 beta did not pick it up, but everyone else's did. I uninstalled NOD32, recovered clean from an image and sure enough AVG called it a trojan. Sorry for the inconvienience to those who downloaded it for the less then an hour it was online, my antivirus choked on me.

I thank you for your post, Deapdesh!

IMO, donation would be considered IF and only IF there wasn't the included extra software... call it ad-ware or spyware, it's unwanted on my end. ;) True, I could of used Windows' add/remove before reaching for As-aware/Spybot, but I wasn't aware that was an option. Furthermore, true: I didn't read though the EULA\LICENCE completely, but I normally think of the files hosted by Majorgeeks.com to be "clean." I would of much rather had a free 10-30 day trial vs having' to deal with the extras.

I too had BitDefender seeing some files as Trojans. There's no way in hell I'm putting your program back on my machine now. Think about that for your next point release.

I'm sure if more folks (here) would of found/installed your program, they would would back my thoughts up.

Also, yes. I do understand that you have bills like the rest of us. I also wish you luck with your programs.

I just wish there where other options for you... other than using options that folks (like those at MajorGeeks) frown on.

Okay, I just visited your website. I found http://www.freeware-alternative.uni.cc/freeware_alternatives_download.html very interesting.

Okay, this area of your site is either very outdated, of you're being a bit too sneaky for my taste.

Well, a trojan is not a good plan. It takes a potentially good program and makes it a joke, another parasite. Anyhow, luckily we have free resources like Black Vipers website for setting up services. Theres a chance this program simply just copied that anyhow being the most known site for service configurations.

Are-Oh, thats not his website as I recall it. :)

Did some checking, its been removed by some other websites finally, after over 1,000 downloads, so hopefully people see this and remove it. Im sure quite a few will post it anyhow.

Yes, I've used Black Viper's site in the past. I just like the idea of havin' a nice, quick GUI (other than Microsoft's Management Console) to sart, stop, and disable services (with Black Viper's info, built in). The idea is perfect! The execution is not. :(

I was assuming it was his site since it's in his sig. here.

Will MajorGeek Repost my listing if I remove ADWARE from it.

If your EULA states that there is no spyware, adware or otherwise any 3rd party software being installed and you completely remove ALL spyware and adware from your software and it can be verified, then yes, I believe the owners may review your software for listing again.

We have discussed it via private messaging, so this thread is dead until I can evaluate a new version.

We cleared it for addition to MajorGeeks. I suggest you download from MajorGeeks for now. We do not link to the authors file directly in these situations until they earn our trust. Im sure he will :)

I've yet to try the "clean" version.

Can someone please enlighten me: does his site, http://www.freeware-alternative.uni.cc/downloads/service-controller-xp/service-controller-xp.html, install droppers? After visiting this page, I'm getting the same crap spyware alerts as before.

Perhaps it's my own fault for not having IE's security tighter, but this is just as lame. :( I suggest you take down the link if this is true.

Yes, BidDefender's goin' nuts, again. I have a feeling this site was the main problem I was havin' before.
