Windows Vista Ultimate. Service Pack won't install. Update goes through the motions all the way to 100% then says failed and reverting.
does it every time. Other updates seem to work.

If I buy a windows 7 upgrade would it bypass all this?

I recently had the same type of problem using wsus offline update. I ended up getting the standalone installer for x64 and was successful with both SP1 & SP2. Then I could get the rest of the updates for Windows Vista.

The interesting thing is that the auto update says "successful"
then looking in updates via the add remove pgms, SP1 is not there. All the other updates are there and seem to have installed without problems.

So if I want to upgrade this to Windows 7, Do all the Windows 7 packages offer the upgrade option? ( versus clean install. And can I upgrade from 32bit to 64 bit or is that a clean install only? )

If you're on a 64-bit machine, you should be able to upgrade to 64-bit. My Dell Latitude E6400 came with Vista Business 32-bit. But my machine IS 64-bit and I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit without issue. The Product Key is good for both the 32-bit AND 64-bit versions but, you can only use it for one or the other. You can't use the same Key for a 32-bit install on one machine and a 64-bit install on another. You'd need separate Keys.

If you right click Computer > Properties what does it say under Windows Edition?

    Earthling,

It says Windows Vista Ultimate, no mention of service packs.

Support for Vista with no service packs ended April 13, 2010. Support for Vista with SP1 installed ended on July 12, 2011 so you haven't been getting updates for more than 5 years.

Support for Vista with SP2 will end on April 11, 2017.

I'm not sure you can find a legitimate Windows 7 upgrade disk this late into Windows 7 life.
You also can not upgrade a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS. Only clean installs are allowed.

Before you even think of moving from Vista to 7, you would need to go to the manufacturer's website and see if there are Windows 7 drivers for your computer. If not, you might lose some hardware like sound, video (generic VGA mode is poor compared to specific video chip drivers), and internet connection. So if the site has drivers, download all of them and archive them to either a CD or a USB stick. It's hard to find drivers for a computer that is limping along on a new version of Windows.

    Very Frustrating.
I purchased Windows 7 upgrade and it stops with error saying vista needs to be SP1

Grrrr stand alone doesn't finish. Auto upgrade keeps offering SP1 , every day... taunting me. What is going on here.

Any Chance this could be a MB BIOS issue?
There are several on ASUS website but ..... none say "fixes glitch on Vista SP1" wouldn't that be nice.

    Hi,
I had a similar problem on an Acer laptop running Win 7. The problem was the motherboard online graphics driver. Plodr found the driver site for me and I was able to change the driver and then get the Service Pack. If you look at the thread it may help your issue. It was September last year.
