I have an emachine with windows xp. My computer keeps telling me I need service pack 2. It goes so far and then I get a service pack 2 setup error, access is denied and then I have to remove what was already downloaded. Why is it doing this?

    Windows update problem

I try to go to the windows update page and it starts running but never gets to the page. I've left it for hours thinking eventually it will get to the page but it never does. Task manager says its running but I can't get to the update page.

Have you tried rebooting and reconect? I think it uses active X controls(not sure) could something be blocking them?

    A couple things:

First, you have to be using Internet Explorer. Any other browser won't work.

Second, make sure that you're security settings allow ActiveX (Tools|Internet Options|Security) or at least prompt you (Usually located as a yellow bar on top of the page).

Those are the most common problems.

You might also want to check to see if Automatic Updates is turned on in the control panel. Finally, check the system tray. Updates might already be downloaded (they'll appear as a yellow shield). Just double click to install.

    Hope this helps.

Merged both topics as they are the same/similar issue.

What is the full error you are given?

also SP2 is a fussy thing, it needs your PC to be fully clean of all Virii/Spyware/Malware to install properly see Malware Removal ( please do not post any logs as they will be removed ) for a guide to making sure your PC is free from malware, also some AntiVirus programs block the install so better step if your on broadband is to download the full SP2 package and once downloaded turn off your AV and install.

    Full SP2 ( 270mb )

once installed you still will need to visit windows update for the updates after SP2s release.

you also to install you need to be logged on as Administrator.
